poking holes in it would really make it sound like chit...

You can cut the muffler off like stated above but it will also sound like crap and it wouldnt be long before the cops were on your case about it!

i assume you have a stock exhaust so you could either get cutouts before the cat(s) or you could just go out and buy an exhaust and have a muffler shop replace your cat(s).. but if you do go the new exhaust route, get headers while your at it.. more power to add to the sound..

, dont poke hole, it will make it sound like trash. If you're desperate for it to be loud, go wiht what you said and hack it(i cant say I haven't done it b4), but if I was you, I would save up for a nice flowmaster 40 and tail pipes, ity'll add alittle more look, and ity'll sound alot better overall, maybe alittle raspy, but it will sound alot better than no muffler at all(unless u have headers )
Take care, good luck with it.

an 80 series is the dual outlet version of the 40, but i have the same engine as you and drove around a bit with open headers when i first did my install, which will sound the same as if you just cut off your exhause or get a cutout and it sounds horrible. There is a different from having a loud sounding muscle car and a car that just makes irreverent loud annoying noise as it goes. The kind of loud your thinking of is not the same as if you take an easy way out. To just a truely good sounding, loud car with out engines you really have to replace the entire system. I have edelbrock headers and a flowmaster catback and it sounds pretty nice.

But for now to answer your question id say just take off the stock muffler and put on a $30 cherry bomb in its place. It doesnt sound amazing but its loud and it will atleast tone your exhaust somewhat. Keep in mind that if your I pipe and CAT are in bad condition this will affect your sound also

But with the cherrybomb what do i do about the dual outs, because the cherrybomb is just a tube right?

Something I did. I wont get you pulled over cause you still have the muffler in place and it increases the sound a bit. Cut out a 8 in long peice right where the pipe starts to bend up over the rear axle. Dont take more that half the pipe out. SO mark down fromt he bend 8in (in the direction of the front of the vehical) and then mark back on either side so you only take about a third of the pipe in diamiter. Kindda like a whistle. I did this for a while, then later cut the pipe clean off. Now im screwed for getting an inspection. It makes its sound a little more mean. Hope this helps.

you could just replace your cat with a test pipe(straight piece of pipe that goes in place of your catalytic converter) Shouldn't cost much and will make your car louder and free up some power.

a 3rd gen with rust holes in the muffler had the sweetest exhaust note i'd ever heard. Poke some holes in 'er, it'll sound awesome.
If i'm wrong, $80 for a new flowmaster 80 series and you can try that route. Or a $30 cherry bomb, but then you're stuck with a single outlet.

Yes your right i didnt know you wanted to keep the dual tails. I put the cherry bomb on in the stock place and instead of having 1 tailpipe i just put a turn down right on the end of the muffler so from eye level you couldnt see any exhaust until you bent down. I actually looked pretty good i actually think with our cars it looked great with no tailpipes i liked that look more than the dual tails i have with my flowmasters now

God! I knew had a cool idea how should i do this? i will trake a Dril and drill about 20 holes in it see how i like it then drill more so this is a good tactic or are you just kidding?

One thing i should do is wear googgles while doing this because i head it gets REALLY dirty when you take a muffler off.

Thanks, Merry Christmas guys

I would really rather see you buy a muffler. But I must say, my friends 92 B4C had an 80 series on it with a hole in it. Just one nickle size hole, and man did it sound pissed off. But I'm sure holes in different places are all going to sound different. I've also heard holey mufflers that sounded horrible.

yea, just a few large-ish holes. No, I wasn't joking, for whatever reason a 3rd gen with a mild 350 and rust holes in the stock exhaust was the nicest sounding exhaust i've heard in a long time.

Too many holes is a bad thing, if the holes are small, (1/4") it'll sound like a leak. A few 3/8" holes or so would be fine. It'll make it deeper, as you've noticed. Loud comes from a different muffler. Oh, remember it'll get louder when you stomp on the gas...

LMAO @ this thread....

Sounding loud and sounding good are two different things. Loud will get you pulled over. Sounding good may raise an eyebrow, but may leave you alone.

Poking holes to make it loud....

For little money you could fab a dual exhaust with a hack saw, a couple of 90 deg exhaust pipe bends from the auto parts store, a couple of cheap bullet mufflers, a couple of turn downs, six exhaust clamps, maybe two hanger clamps and twelve cheap beers.

(take if from me) Later in life you'll need a couple grand to buy a good set of hearing aids

Install a full exhaust from the heads to the street, throw the L03 in the garbage, and build a real motor thatll actually push enough air through so it actually sounds good AND loud.

Yeah i put the flowmaster 80 series cat back on mine and it sounded fing awesome. Then i went dumb and cut it out and just putt catback straight pipes out. Sounds loud but not good. So im installing the 80s back. If i where you cut of the cat and invest in the cat back 80s from flowmaster

dude dont poke holes in your muffler, thats just stupid. if you want loud and cheap go to auto zone or a muffler shop and get a cheap $25 dollar glasspack, (not a trushpack) cut off the stock muffler and bolt that one one. that will be loud, and raspy, but none the less loud. but putting holes in your muffler???

I have an 89 gta with dual cats and when i first put the new motor in my car it was stock all the way down to the air filter and i had no more money for an exhaust but i hate driving a car any car for that matter that doesnt have sound so i bought some bullets and had them welded in where the cats were and cut the rest off and put a turn down in front of the axle it sound really good and was really loud but then i got a 1992 z/228 without motor or tran for 100 bucks that had edelbrock shorties[that i had recoated]and y pipe with no cats and a hooker catback i love the way it sounds but its not loud enuff for my taste but now i can talk without having to yell but i think i will get a eletric cutout for when i want "LOUD" and keep it closed the rest off the time............

REMEMBER!!!!

POWER makes noise.........NOISE DOES NOT MAKE POWER.
If it did, Hondas would be fast......you want you car to sound like a Honda with a fart pipe??? Save your money..... do it right the first time.......if not, you end up paying more to fix a botched job than you would doing it right the first time......it takes patience to build something nice. Never try to impress your "idiot" friends (and yes....we ALL have them) in 10 years they wont matter. so try to Impress everyone. because if you do stupid things to your car you only impress stupid people. Do you right and have something nice just take your time and then you can tell all the ricers "People with real cars are laughting at you"<-- remember that, you'll need it later!!!!

exactly with my stock lg4 with 200k+ i had added a 80series cat-back and new catco cat along with a drop in k&n and it sounded good but once that motor went i did a cheap build on another 305 just to get some engine building experiance and i got a decent amount of power too but any way with the new motor the exhaust sounded almost completely different beacuse of more compression larger cam and of course more power. i cant wait to here it again with my longtubes and new cam and the true duals

If you cut the muffler off, the cops wont bother you too much. The cat muffles the exhaust quite a bit. If you wanna be sneaky, you could run the pipe to the back of the car, and leave the muffler in place. If you get pulled over, i doubt the cop will be able to tell by just a quick peak the the muffler isnt actually hooked up.

Ive done this twice on cars for a derby. One was a nissan quest, the other was a 78 monte carlo. The nissan had a 1.4L or something close, and the monte had a 350. Both had cats, wasnt that bad at all.

It took me 2 years to gather all the parts for my 350. After popping that in, my exhaust was louder

Why not just leave it stock? If you want loud, turn up the radio. It wont sound good, and you'll be the prime target of every cop in town. BTDT...

I preferably like to have the engine be quiet as possible without hurting the power. No sense in making lots of noise for no reason at all. Everyone who sees you will think: "Another kid in an old, junk camaro..." Keep it stock. When you have the money, get a full cat back exhaust, headers, and hi-flow cat. Youll get much better results in the long run, and probably save money from avoiding lots of future tickets.

a dead stock 305 TBI sounds ok if you take the catback off and just leave it exiting under the car after the cat.... its loud, but it sounds ok.

btw, its *******, white trash, i-want-to-halfa$$ it because im poor people like you that give everyone else with a camaro (or domestic for that matter) a HUGE hassle... not from the bad image you give us to all of the other car guys, but the horrible image you give everyone.. including law enforcment, politicians, ect.

i can respect the kid whos driving the stock car because hes saving up.. i can respect the kid who saved up all summer to put a nice exhaust on his rustbucket... i can respect the kid who spent months with a welder and some scrap pipe, redoing the exhaust until it flows/sounds good.

i have no respect for the loser who just wants to poke holes and rip **** off to make it loud.

Put on headers??

the guy wants the EAZIEST way to make the car loud.....Put an LS1 in it.......put a Hemi in it....... Heck!!! put a stick of dynomite in the tail pipe and light it...........that be loud, only down side is its only loud once. go to the auto parts store, buy 2 90 degree bends one 45 degree bend and 3 pieces of striaght pipe. set the 2 90's and the 3 straight pipes up in a "U" shape.Find someone who can weld to cut a hole in the back of the "U" in the right place. cut off the old Muffler put the "U" in its place and rig up one hanger. 50 bucks spent and a little time. dosent site my taste but it works and keeps the noise out of the car. Do it........just do .......naw,naw really, do it....come on....do it
----------
Quit saying Hella, its hella stupid......
