Exhaust help! Damn you dynomax!

Well, I was planning on redoing my exhaust with the Dynomax 2 1/4 dual exhaust kit.. If you are considering this... STAY AWAY! Nothing fit right, and all the mounts would have to be customized, unlike what the guy at summit told me when i bought them... So, instead of spending 300+ for the work of putting these on and listening to it rattle like hell, im sending the mufflers and pipes back to summit (and get my $250 back) and im going to get a catback. Any suggestions?

Flowmaster is WAY too loud for me. What 3" catback is quieter (but not toooo quiet... hehe) than flowmasters 80 series?

And, is $200 worth it for the y-pipe that hooker makes for the 2460 headers? The part # at www.summitracing.com is HOK-16767HKR. It says its made for 82-92 camaro/firebirds with hooker 2460 headers, which is what i have bloted to the motor right now....

the new y-pipe that hooker makes for the 2460's *i believe* y's into a 2.5" pipe, so if your looking for best performance, it will either need to be modified to y into a 3"+ pipe, (just cut off RIGHT after y junction and weld on larger pipe) OR you'll have to have someone fabricate a y-pipe for you. personally, i think that the dynomax would still be a good way to go, just take it to a shop and get it done. but, that's just my personal opinion.

as far as a catback i would suggest, you might look into the hooker. i think there is a 3" dynomax available now too, which is relatively quiet and not too expensive.

wasnt a catback, was headers to tips -mufflers. The amoung of work (aka, hours=money) to get it to work wasnt worth it for me for dual 2 1/4 without mandrel bends. I think it was, like, $130 or something. The part # was WLK-89009.

I was thinking maybe the hooker catback as a replacement...

From Summit's on-line description of the kit: "These exhaust kits are designed for people who take pride in creating their own custom exhaust." (emphasis added)

2460's aren't a good place to start. By the time you get them tied to a system, you'll have spent as much as if you would getting 2055's. But, now that you've got them, the HOK-16767HKR is okay until the downpipes come together - the rest of it is worthless. Almost 200 bucks and you're going to throw 3/8ths of it away.

For the sake of review: $150 for the 2460's, $195 for the y-pipe which requires futher modification to be useful; that's $345 before you start the modifications - vs. 2055's for $380. And the 2055's have a sweet y-pipe. And more primary internal flow area.

The kit is really easy to put up. All you have to do is drill one small hole in the subframe for a mount and that is it. No other fabrication is needed unless you have different headers.

If I would've known then that it was more of a custom kit, i wouldnt' have bought it; my own fault, I talked to the summit guy more than i read the description. Also, i would have gotten the 2055's with a coated y-pipe, trust me, if I thought (originally) that i was going to go with a 3inch single pipe. Oh well, i already mounted the headers and ran the engine, so sending them back to Jet-hot is not an option. My exhaust guy here is thinking he can make me the y-pipe with 2 2.5" pipes into a 3" pipe and make it extra long to delete the cat for somewhere in the range of $130. So, my total comes out to $454 (if the y costs me $130). I got my 2460's from Jethot for $324 shipped. I know it isnt as good as the 2055's (well, marginally, the inner diameter of the primaries isnt exactly choking my exhaust cause the gauge is slightly bigger).

The reason i asked about that y-pipe is because i thought it was 2.5" to 3"... because i saw it said that the inlet diameter was 3".. i guess i just have know clue what they mean by inlet diameter... oh well, thats out of the question then.

Does anyone have anything good to say about the Hooker Catback? I dont want a catback that is really quiet, just not quite as loud as the Flowmaster 80 series. I haven't ever heard a flowmaster up close, but i've heard that its pretty loud and rough sounding, and the sound clips i have gotten have pretty much confirmed that.

the hooker system is the way to go. it's priced right and isn't overly loud at idle and SCREAMS at WOT. this is the setup i would have gone with had i not done duals.

I bought the 3" dynomax setup and had no problems. It bolted right up in the stock location as a direct replacement. No complaints.
