header hitting metal pipe, what to do?

Hello, I have got back on my project car. Installed hedman headers today. Left side fine, right side.. removed motor mount bolt and jacked up engine....got the header into position but it is a very tight fit. When bolted up- half way-, I let the engine down and it hits a metal line (emmission pipe). The fit is so tight that it holds the engine up. It is not even close to the point where it could be bolted together (motor mount). And if you tell me that the mounts need to be changed what is the easiest way to do that- with the motor in the vehicle. Thanks...

Not sure on laws where you live but you could always take out the emissions crap. You have headers anyway. (unless you got the emission friendly headers)

I'm trying to imagine what is hitting what emissions pipe and holding the engine up.

Could you be more specific?

on the right hand side there is an emmission pipe that runs along the top of the frame and follows the frame down. I have not gone under the vehicle to see where the pipe goes.

That is the heater hose. Unbolt it and move it out of the way.

That would be the line that supplies air to the cat. You can loosen it at the cat and even bend it a little to get out of the header's way. Then reattach it to the cat. Nothing hard to do. The line is somehow flexible, just don't bend it too much, it could break.

Hope this helps.

From the description, it is the heater pipe, running from the heater core, on top of the frame rail. It's a typical problem with headers. Unbolt it, and try to bend it a bit (I couldn't, no leverage). Pull it over more to the side, and then drill a new support hole. Fortunately, the pipe has rubber hoses on all ends, so it is moveable to a small degree. There is another support bolt on the inside of the frame rail, you may have to bend the tab a bit. You'll have to remove the header on the pass side to access that bolt.

The description above is what led me to believe it is the A.I.R. pipe to the cat. I guess the only person who knows for sure is Notplayn.

Did you get it resolved yet? I want to install headers on mine and am also curious.

True, he says it's emissions, but the A.I.R. pipes don't run on the frame rail. They are just over the exhaust ports and go down behind the engine to the cat(s).

Hello everyone, I am back on it and the metal line I believe is to the heater core ( metal line with rubber hoses coming off of it on the right hand side ) Anyway, I bolted the header up and started letting the engine down. (lifted only on the right hand side). As it comes down it's hitting the small metal line running to the fuel canister. Once that is moved and will post what happens.

One other thing, when I had these headers made I had the emmissions pipes welded to them. I have decided that I am not going to put the emmissions back on. It looks like they just took a piece of metal plumbing pipe with threads on the end. I was considering capping it. Anyone ever do that? Thanks again for the responses.

If you've got enough clearance, throw the metal pipes away and replace them with straight heater hose. 'Course you don't want to burn the hose on your headers, so make sure you've got room first. It'll make life a lot easier in case one of those damn "question mark shaped" heater hoses bursts at the firewall... I replaced mine once and swore "never again".. when that summer came around, I just used heater hose between the pump and firewall. You'll need one 5/8th hose and one 3/4" hose.
