Exhaust valve/flange thing?

ive got a 84TA im doing a 350 swap on, theres the little exhaust valve/flange thing on the passenger side where the exhaust bolts to the header. my little flange/flap broke off so if its necessary i need to replace it. in ca so needa stay smog legal. what all does this thing do. if its better to go without it i could just use the one i have without the flap so it'd just be the rod so it wouldnt restrict when closed. thanks for the help/info

That little device is called an EFE...early fuel evaporator and it only comes into play in the morning when your car is cold. By restricting exhaust flow, it helps the engine warm up quicker, thus reducing emissions. They sell from GM for abot 159.00. And you need it in CA to pass the visual emissions test. Lose the flapper and reinstall it. It will look functional from the outside, yet open the exhaust flow inside the tube.

For quicker warm-ups in the winter, a functional one would better.

Not quite. By restricting the flow on that bank, the exhaust is forced through the exhaust "cross-over" passage inbetween the center exhaust ports of the passenger side head, through a passage under the intake manifold plenum, and out through the same cross-over passage in the driver's side head.

So if you have replaced your intake manifold with a smog-legal EGR performer edelbrock piece, is this still the case? If not, can that EFE be discarded?

The Performers (and Action +) have the cross-over passage.

No. The y-pipe isn't designed to use the valve.

Then how can it be CARB approved and 50 state legal if I will be eliminating an emissions device when I install the headers?

The headers are approved and legal only for the application listed.

In the case of 2055's, they are approved for '86-'90 TPI single cat vehicles. I managed to get past the Colorado inspection with them w/o the EFE valve. An inspector more **** would look up the CARB exemption number and know they are not for a carb'd application.
