Blue smoke at start up
title says it. i have a huge puff of blue smoke come out when i start my camaro, and then the catalytic converter spits water like a hose. what's wrong in the smoke part? is that normal? it's a cross-fire 1983 305. and about the water, is that normal too?

do a search on valve seals, I got 5 dollars that says you'll find atleast 2 pages of info covering valve seals when you do!
I wouldnt it bother you, it's really very normal for our cars...
btw, do the search in the General Tech forum.

valve seals. there will be plenty of posts detailing how to swap them, along w/ more information than you will need to know about what kind etc you need.

to give you an idea the valve seals do cause this my car used to smoke at start up and at idle when hot. i took a day ripped my heads off used a valve compressor cleaned everything. some times you need to get your heads machined depends on the valve seats and stuff. alos when you do this make sure that you un bolt and bolt them back on in the torque order or you might warp your heads. also you should pick up a full gasket rebuild kit. it gives you everything you need as per gaskets and valve seals.

the water is just unburnt fuel. change your plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor, if that doesnt fix it, then change your O2s I guess though it wont make much of a diff... on cold start or closed loop ( i think it's closed loop atleast lol, brainfart) the computer is in charge of pre-set idle speed, if it's telling the carb or FI's to just dump in fuel, then you're just running too rich, and that's your water.
