GUTTING a cat is when you take a pipe and ram it through the inlet and through the outlet of your cat. It makes it a straight through design. It is much better to get an aftermarket cat. All gutting will do is make less backpressure and backfire.

gutting cats

when i still had my 355 tpi w/ dual cats, i dropped the exhaust, and on top of the cats , i very neatly cut 2 large openings. you can follow the design in the metal as to where to cut. just cut 3 sides, and you can fold the metal back, out of the way. then you remove the "bricks" through the top. then you can weld the windows shut, paint , to prevent rust at the welds. this way theres no noise from traces of crushed "bricks" left behind. word of the wise though, i wasted my time, because the car picked up "zero" in the 1/4 mile. now a single cat may respond much better. my dual cats however, did not. at least it was a labor only, mod.
