Exhaust Cut-Out or Catalytic Converter?

I took my car in, and they ran into a problem where clearance would be an issue. Basically, the only place i can put the cut-out, is where the catalytic converter is.

So i told the guy to play it safe and put in the converter. The converter is a Dynomax Super-Converter hi-flow 3".

Problem is i have a 3" Flowtech with a McCord Powerplate II i cant use now.

Im guessing best thing i can do now is to just hear and see how it is with the converter, and if its not to loud, maybe i can drop it in place of the cut-out later.

My only experience without a converter is with my 3.1L V6 1993 Grand Prix SE, and it sound very raspy when u accelerated.

You guys think i made the right move?

BTW the car was in for headers, cat-back, sub-frame connectors, and some other stuff, so that was just the ONE problem they came up with.

they cant put the cut out in front or the cat. I know your car will sound sweet with headers and no cat , since its a 350 . But the cut out will be cool to have and also have the cat , so the car can be quiet and loud.

What do you mean you can't use it???????????? I have that same cat, the same FlowTech Race Rady, the same Power Plate II and the same car and mine works great. Take it back in there and have the cut-out put behind the cat (it's legal there too). They may have to move the cat forward a smidge, but I got all that done, plus a flange put in my down pipe for like $150. I'd assume that since you bought the McCord, you just like to make noise like I do. Believe me, you will make plenty of noise with it behind the cat. I'll get you a pic when I get home of the underside of the car so you can see it fits great.

I wanted the cut-out in front of the cat, so it could by-pass that as well when its opened. I do like it to be louder too, but i also want to bypass everything, including the cat.

If i put it behind the cat, im always gonna be questioning why i put it there.

The best i can do now is just see how it is...and if its not super loud, i can probably deal with a cut-out instead of a cat.

I would really like to hear from you guys though. Especially guys with a full exhaust done..headers to cat-back, and have NO cat. If it sounds REALLY good, and not raspy or distorted sound, then ill feel alot more confident on putting the cut-out instead of that cat in the future.

Right now im 50/50

I put my cut-outs before the cat. I even put 2 3inch cut-outs. So go back and tell the guy he can do it. I think he is just lazy.
Peace Out,

With that cat you have in there, it won't make a bit of difference, performance wise, if the cat is in front or behind it. That sucker flows like mad, that's why I got one. I would have liked the cut out in front, but then I got to thinking. If you get pulled over (because of opening it in town) and it's in front of the cat, or in place of the cat you are going to get two tickets. If it's behind the cat, only one. I also like the idea of not having to jack up my car, and swap the cat back in at emissions time. I have no idea how youd get it through with them in front.

Well i dont have to worry about emissions here, we dont have any. Tomorrow or Friday ill get to see what the car sounds like. And if it is possible to get that cut-out in front of the cat, despite the fact that these guys cant do it, ill find a place, i know theres alot of places in Michigan that work on that stuff, i just gotta find someone.

If you know any in southeast Michigan, hook me up!

that cat (as long as its kept in good working order) flows more then a 3" open pipe. the only restrictions on it is the inlet and outlet....

if there are inspections, might as well keep it legal, put it after the cat...
