My exhaust is too loud for daily driving.
I have Hooker Super Competition shorty headers bolted to a 3" y-pipe, which is connected to a Hooker Super Competition 3" catback with no catalytic converter... The exhaust is so loud on acceleration that I can't hear my girlfriend talk. She doesn't like it that loud. She did when it was new, but now it's annoying.
Can I stuff the muffler with steel wool without hurting performance?

problem solved- I stuffed the I-pipe with a rolled up aluminum screen about 3x2 feet... It dropped the noise level significantly and seems to be holding up to the exhaust heat (after 25-30 miles that is). It doesn't smoke or melt, and it's pretty nifty.

have you thought about sound proofing your car????
Right now I have no carpet or drain hole and you cant hear anyhing inside the car but rumbling. With the carpet on it was "better" but Im sure you can dampen the sound almost completely. The guys on the sound board know about this kind of stuff

I too want to regret getting such a loud muffler. Neighbors in NYC are getting tired of me waking them up a 4:00 in the morning.
I think they make tips that quiet down the noise a bit.

Im running the 2055's, no cat, and the hooker catback for the 86 up, i forget the part number. It sounds good, a little loud, but only when you get on it. Eventually when I find some money I'll put in a high flow cat, that should bring it down a bit. 84 z28, edelbrock intake, speed demon carb, no emissions, mallory hei. All computers must die... hehe unless you set up it real good.

put a bullet where the cat goes..
then a glass pack in the I pipe
and then a dynomax muffler.
then go out and make these idiots wonder how you're passing them when they cant even hear your car at WOT.

The other bad thing is that my wife can hear me when I come down the block, so it would be hard for me to sneak up on her and find her with the milkman. So much for the element of suprise.

im toying with the idea, but until i get the longtubes and dual cutouts (electric cutouts) im not going to do it...
basicly my idea is this: when i want to be loud, i have the cutouts.
but for the rest of the time, i can have a "normal" quiet car. clearly hear the radio, talk to girls, ect.
the performance change isnt any diffrent, but the noise level is.
my plan calls for the cutouts after the headers, custom shaped tubing to round BETWEEN the trans and crossmember, into a Y pipe that has a short glasspack/bullet then over the axle into a quiet muffler. goal is to walk softly and carry a big stick.
