Clanking noise near cat and loss of power
Hey guys just over a week ago I posted that I was hearing a clanking noise near my cats. The consensus was that it was an air pipe or the possibility that the brick in the cat broke into peices.
Just a couple days ago the noise around the cat has gotten worse. My car sounds like my friends 90 rs, a more muffled deep tone, not the powerful punch my z28 used to put out. Also I haved noticed a considerable power loss. At normal acceleration the cars moves fine. When I try to get on it, at about 3,000 rpms the car begins to hesitate and takes a long time to shift. Is it possible that the cats brick broke up and got jammed in the exhuast? Let me throw out that my car does have the dual cat setup from factory with the stupid "y" pipe design. I don't think it is driveline problem because the exhaust tone has changed in the last couple days. My car sounds like a UPS truck. I hate it and am so frustrated with it now.
If is the cat are high flow cats just as good as stock, emmissions wise? The reason I ask is because I live in Dirty Jersey and I have to get my car inspected asap. Jersey is pretty tough on emmisions, the second toughest compared to California.

The stuff on the inside could have broken up and clogged the outlet. it could also be flying around in there and that is what you are hearing. I think it is time for a new cat.

Yup, sounds like a cat that just went south. Time to stuff a pipe through it or replace it.

hey thanks for the replies. I'll probably order two random technology cats for replacement.
CraZ-28 I know this is slighty off topic but how does your car handle the arizona heat. The reason I ask is because I will be moving out there in the fall to attend asu or ua whichever accepts me. I also noticed you have a gutted cat, I can't do that here in Jersey but was wondering how tough emmissions testing in AZ are?

Emmisions isn't too bad as long as your car is running fine. After going through emmissions with the gutted cats, I took a look at my test and the difference between having them and not was almost nothing. Here all you need to do is pass the visual (smop pump, air tubes, cats), sniffer, and gas cap. Also, depending on where you live, if you move to Pheonix, you may not have to go through emmisions. At least that's what I've heard.
Hope that helps.

I just had the same problem with my cat. The brick inside came loose and was blocking the exit out of the cat big time. I'd kick it down and the rpm's would jump up, but no go at all! I took my y-pipe off and chiseled all the honeycomb stuff up and dumped it out and put everything back together again. It runs perfectly fine again now. I'll probably get a new cat sometime in the future, but gutting out the honeycomb stuff will get you by in the short duration just fine.
