I agree and I think they look out of place. Unless he means side exhit exhaust where the tips just peak out from under the side ground effects.

'70 Challenger TA style is cool (tips poking out) but 427 Cobra style just doesn't work on F-bodys.

actually the side pipes got me thinking a little more, for a muffler you can build one similar to what NASCAR uses for their exhuast tubing or square flat tubing. that is to say if you have the tools to make a flat muffler. It would a good short cut if you dont plan on having a shop make your exhaust, or you are using short headers and running true duals that dont go into the factory location, or you just dont feel like running the tubing under the rear axle. sortta like what i have done using the area under the driverseat i plan on using heat shields and making a thin-line cat fit under it.

How you gonna do that when the tubing is only maybe half an inch deep? Not much you can do for sound deadening there.

side pipes

I think the side pipes on the z28 look great. Can't find much info however. Only source seems to be older corvette sites. I have only seen one in person and it looked and sounded good. Plus eliminates all the dual exhaust hassle under the car. Ground clearence must be an issue but I have welded sub frame connecters so I am already lower than most. Anyone have more pics and tips?

I know a guy with an 88 IROC-Z and a 502 big block with lots of work putting out just over 654 hp at the flywheel. And this car was also the runner up in this last summers super chevy show, for best prostock of show. And he has a 4" collector and a 3" pipe dumping down and towards the outside of the car, and he has no problems with ground clearance. His car should also run in the mid 9's as it sits, and runs on 93 pump gas, and idles like a bear, he sat in the line to get into route 66 for an hour and a half, with the car running, and it never overheated.

heres the motor.

yeah, they run a muffler by dr. gas, the same people with the innovative x-pipes utilizing all kinds of tubing...

Some specific classes might at certain tracks where noise is an isisue, but I was referring more to the nextel series. Go to a race some time. Hang out in the pits. They don't run mufflers period. The noise is part of the attraction.

thats true to an extent, however alot of the throttle stop and 8.90 second brackets classes, and other classes require a muffler. But when your running a car that runs 8.90's, its obvious the bullet muffler is your best muffler.

naw, i will let you hang out with the nascar croud, i would much rather go street legal drag racing with the nsca with a mandatory muffler rule...

Hey, I have always wanted to do some side pipes, and that first picture with the 427 style is what i always wanted to do, but now that i look at it, it aint that great, not bad tho. I have a question for you guys. I want to put pipes coming out the sides of my car, right before the rear tiers. I have true dual exuast set up right now, shortys, and some pipes, i found in a yard. 12 bucks! Anyhow, right now the pipes go to the passanger side together, and i am dirving around with straight pipes, nothing but, no muffler no cat. Loud as ****, and i am gonna get pulled over soon. I was wondering what type of mufflers i could run along each side, and still have a great nice loud sound. Keeping the true dual. Are those red glass pack mufflers any good at shucks ? They are long and thin, so they would prolly work well, but how do they sound? Anyone know? Also i am not gonna use any CATS. Thanks

Side pipes

I agree. I at least want more info on the pipes because the body style looks like a good fit for them. The first picture is what I had in mind but they need to be tucked in a little more. What about heat shields under the ground effects panels? Are they necessary if you tuck them under the body a little more? I'm sure there are mufflers made that would work. Like I said before I have seen one car with them. They were chromed and had at least one header pipe visable in the wheel well on the passenger side where our y-pipe comes out now. I'm sure he had to do some mods in the engine bay and/or wheel well.

a guy in my home town used to have these on his 84 Z28. He high centered on them over a speed bump... it was funny.
