exhaust dump question

Well I am not able to see the picture so I may be seeing what you are saying incorrectly. But right after the cat should still be 3 or 4 feet from the gas tank. So I can't imagine how it's blowing exhaust on it. The place right before the muffler would be close to the gas tank.
But anyway, from personal experience if you cut the exhaust off before the cat and leave it there you will more than likely get exhaust fuems inside the car when you are sitting still idleing. And even during deceleration sometimes. I was even gettting them with the exhaust dumping midway down the car. And especially if you turn your vent or heater on. That will probably suck them directly in.
And your car will be MUCH louder once you remove the CAT. You will more than likely need a muffler.

get a regular"catback" exhaust system. it will bolt on to your cat and everything and give you a nice exhaust system again.... solving all your problems.
when you add headers, just add them into the new exhaust system... shorty headers with Y pipe make it a straight bolt on ordeal and longtubes can be fabbed to go into it.
and no, it wont hurt anything sitting like it is now with the catback off it... unless you have a insane amount of caked on grease or somthing right infront of the exit...
oh, and if theres nothign wrong with the cat, leave it on.. if its clogged or somthing, im not your daddy, so im not saying what you should do, but a new cat or a pipe flanged to meet the catback will work to connect the "catback" exhaust and your new header setup...
