Dynomax exhaust

I'm looking for a cheap exhaust system for my brother's 92 Firebird. It has a new y-pipe back to the cat, but the cat back is rusted out. I wanted to get the Borla for him since I can get it for $575, but my dad doesn't want to pop for that. The Dynomax Super Turbo cat back I can get for $175, so I was thinking that might be better. How is this exhaust system? What do the tips look like? I guess I can always put Borla tips on it since he likes to look of those better. Anyone have any suggestions or pictures?

My dad wanted to get the Hooker Aerochamber since he liked the sound, but do they come in a cat-back system?

go to www.jegs.com they have the dynomax for $160 (hey, it's $15 saved). the dynomax sounds decent, but nothing impressive, and nowhere near the loudness of borlas. the tips on them look just like stock, nothing special.

i'm pretty sure the aerochamber muffler is the one that comes on the hooker catbacks, but check jegs for that too (i know they at least sell a hooker catback).

Probably Hooker at Jegs would be the way to go. I know for my car it was 207, but I think it's 265 or something around there for newer f-bodies.

Actually, the Dynomax is $150, I got it wrong. This is at cost from my supplier. The Borla is $560. For some reason I can't get Hooker cat-backs, but I can get the mufflers. Hmmm, odd. I may just order through Jegs, but I hate to give my competitors business.

I think I'm gonna convince him on the Hooker. I wanted that when the car was mine and I'l love to see the car with it on there.

better performance? can you back up that statement? I like my Dynomax just fine and it's great for the sleeper look.

wooh some people on here are way to edgy. the hooker flows much better then the dynomax 150 buck system. i have a dynomax ultra flow race series and i love it. nothing wrong with dynomax at all, just if your going to go cheapo, id rather the hooker.

I have the Dynomax Super Turbo, the previous owner put it on. It is the worst muffler. Probably a little better than stock but i woudl never put it on if it was me. Once in a while it will put out a nice rumble but normally it's quiet, too quiet. I want my car to be loud and proud. I like to hear it rumble, but that's me. If you're looking for a quiet muffler get a super turbo but I would look elsewhere personally. I'm actually replacing mine with a Flowmaster 80 series next month, once i have the cash.

That's RIGHT!!!!

I totally forgot that people think you're cool when you wake them up at 3am because of your cool, loud car!!

And hot chics with big hoo hoo's that are walking down the street hear you, and rip off their shirts as they come running toward you, hoping to be your girlfriend because you have a loud car!!!

And cops clock you doing 110 mph, but once they hear how loud and cool your car is, they decide to not even pull you over because your car must be too fast to catch anyway. After all, loud cars are faster!!!

Sorry if I sound stupid in my thinking, but it's all true!!!

I'm not worried what others do or think about my car I like the sound of flowmasters. I have an opinion of my own and I'd like to be able to post it without being attacked. Next time keep the comments to yourself because i sure as hell don't want to hear them.

Keep your loud exhaust to yourself then...

That's what people just don't give anymore. Common courtesy. Why in the heck does everyone in creation have to listen to your loud car just because you think it's cool?

And that's just it. Why does it have to be loud? Can't it sound good without having to be loud?

Well... you have to have loud exhaust so you can hear it over the stereo. So, you have to get a louder stereo so you can hear it over the exhaust. Repeat ad infinitum..

i got the dynomax super turbo for 158$$. i like it. the install wasnt too bad and i like how the tips dont hang out from under the car like theyre invisible. they sound real nice all quiet and burbly and ive like how they sound at wot too. and i dont think theyres gona be too much diff in performance as long as u got mandrel bends and the three inch Intermediate pipe should be pretty overkill. besides its not even your car.

Whats that $150 kit come with? is it mandrel bent, 3 inch?

If it was I would just buy the kit and throw on any 3" muffler you wanted.

I don't think the dynomax kit is the 3 inch intermediate pipe. I think it is 2.5 inches. That is why the kit is not the best for performance.

However Dynomax sells the parts individually to make a 3 inch cat back and it's not much more if I recall. I was using it and I think the I-pipe was like 90 bucks and the tail pipes are like 40 each. But of course that leaves the muffler. Dynomax makes a couple of high cfm mufflers that are fully welded for the 3 inch I-pipe.

So if you do go with the dynomax, make sure that kit isn't the 2.5 inch I-pipe.

Also the part numbers for the 3 inch stuff are on this board. I think if you search for "dynomax part numbers"

Here's a thread discussing it: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...dynomax+number

intermediate pipe - 44063 ($82.99 thru Summit)
Front I pipe & 43248 ($48.99 thru Summit) a.k.a. OA I pipe
ultraflow muffler- 17227 ($99.95 thru Summit)
RH tailpipe - 43243 ($30.39 thru Summit)
LH tailpipe - 43244 ($30.69 thru Summit)

That muffler will flows 940 cfm; enough to support 427 'loss free' HP.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge(all my cars have had duals) can you elxplain these in more detail "intermediate pipe - 44063 ($82.99 thru Summit)
Front I pipe & 43248 ($48.99 thru Summit) a.k.a. OA I pipe "

Are these the pipes after a Y pipe, and over the axle??

Yes. These are the pipes that start immediately after the catalytic converter all the way to the muffler.

Oh, and when I talked to the guys at Dynomax, they said that there cat-back (or atleast the one I got) is actually 2 3/4". This is also evident by the piece of pipe the muffler shop had to weld in after my cat because the i-pipe was too large.

Maybe they've changed it since I got mine, but if I remember correctly, the Super Turbo muffler with the stock type outlets for our cars only comes with either 2 1/2" or 2 3/4" inlet, so there's no point to getting the 3" i-pipe if it all just gets bottlenecked at the muffler. Now if you really want to use the Super Turbo with the 3" inlet, you have to get the one that has two tailpipes on one side, next to each other.

Or you can get the Ultra Flow like I listed. It's split at the rear, yet flows more HP than 90% of street cars out there.

It has one 3" inlet, and two 2.5" split outlets.

I'm kind of confused about the I pipe and OA pipes.

I got those numbers from someone here (Tas), but it was my understanding that the I pipe was to the axle, and the OA pipe was over the axle.

I looked on Summit's website and it's not very descriptive. Both part #'s list it for 86-91, VIN code F. One's $82.99 and the other is $48.99

Obviously I'd go for the cheaper one, but I don't know what the differences are. I suppose that's something you'd have to call them about.

Axle/Gears: Moser 9"
Intermediate I-pipe= pipe from cat to axle
OA I-pipe= Over Axle pipe

am i thinking correctly here? that this is actually a 2-piece pipe from the cat to the muffler?

that would be so cool to run that pipe to a 3" moroso spiral muff to one tailpipe...ground clearance, here i come! (what can i say, the moroso muffs are BAD!)

I wish I could remember. At one point, shortly after joining this web site, I did a post with all of the part numbers necessary to run a 3" dynomax cat-back. It was probably the most descriptive post that I've ever made, but I don't remember anymore.

muffler is ment to keep things quiet.

cutout is for all open performance.

elec cutout gives best of both worlds..

heh... as far as being quiet goes, the dynomax exhaust is pretty quiet.... i found someone local that has one, and it wasnt loud at all... sounds kinda like a "broken in" stock muffler... lil louder then OEM, but not loud enough that it grabs undue attention...
some of us prefer not to grab the attention of the cops when we leave a light.... heh....

that said, while i have nothing to back it up what so ever, my gut feeling is, the dyno max is going to be a bit restrictive on my blown 400... so im thinking of ordering the hooker one...

i did find this today: http://www.boyleworks.com/ta400/psp/exhaust.html

and theres a few graphs there... dynomax seems to do pretty good there... but i donno.... im still undecided.

the one thing i do know is that i want a quiet exhaust. mufflers job is to be quiet... cutout is to make annoyingly loud blow out the fart can car next to me noise..... but the nice thing is i can close it before i turn into the neighborhood and **** off everyone at 3am....

Well I went with the Dynomax Ultra-Flo Cat-back on mine.. the price was good, and it gave me the sound I was looking for. The I-pipe is a 2.5" dia. single piece from the cat over the axel to the muffler. The I-Pipe is Aluminized Steel, the muffler is Stainless, and it came with all the clamps etc. oh and of course the tail pipes.. which as mentioned above are stock looking.. which was fine for me. didn't want to make them straight coming out the back and look like a stang. To many of those around here.
