Catalytic Converter Info - From Carsound
Hi,
I had a nice conversation with the folks from Carsound today. I'd like to share the information with you. All these statements were collected from Carsound while speaking with them. I have my own opinions on things, but i'll save them for another post.
Carsound makes a huge line of catalytic converters. The 94000 series are the highest flowing cats that carsound makes.
94019 Is the # that is recommended to use with a 3" exhaust, and functional AIR setup. It is 16" long with 3" inlet and outlet, and an air tube (3-way converter).
94009 Is the alternative #, it is 16" long 3" inlet / 3" outlet car WITHOUT air (2-way converter).
Whats the difference?
Depends on your emissions testing. A catalytic converter with 3-way design (air) removes HC, NOX, and CO2..
2-Way converters (non air) remove HC, and NOX from the exhaust.
2-Way converters flow more than 3-Way, because they use 1 solid brick. Therefore there is less turbulence between the bricks.
The 3-way converter has 2 bricks, with a pipe between the bricks pumping air.
However, 2-way converters require higher exhaust temperatures otherwise they clog up, and as noted above they have higher emissions.
Another note, is that apparently through testing the longer converters flow more than the shorter ones.
And a tech note from Carsound: On 2-way converters, don't try plumbing constant air into the manifolds, or before the cat. (this is only for start-up). What will happen, is the bricks will heat up too much ont he engine side and melt!
UPDATE:
Carsound called me today.. I got some more information.
94219 is a higher flowing version of 94019. It has a larger body.
94209 is in the same sense, higher flowing than 94009.
94009 Is the highest flowing converter carsound makes.

Which cat should I buy?
I used Carsound in the above example because 1) they ansered the phone 2) I've heard good things about them 3) they are cheap!. Carsound cats can be had for under $35 bucks on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2441570509
However, there are PLENTY of other cats out there. The top 3 cats appear to be:
Random Technology http://www.randomtechnology.com
Carsound http://www.car-sound.com
Xtremeflow http://www.xtremeflow.com
Catco - available at http://www.summitracing.com
Stay away from Arvin, or other OEM replacement cats found at
places like autozone, napa, and so on.
Other companies such as Hooker, Hedman also provide aftermarket cat's but the prices seem very high, and I could not find many reviews to back up performance claims.
I picked up an xtremeflow XF7 2-way cat recently, and am going to try it on my car. Then I'm going to try a Carsound 94019 3-way cat and see what the difference is in emissions, and performance.

I've got random tech on my LS1 and you can look straight through them. Flow plenty for me and I'm making over 500 hp. If I had a cat on my third gen I'de have a random tech, lol.

I've heard good and bad things about random.
Some kid flowbenched LS1 cats. Didn't do the random, but I'm sure you can call them and ask them what the flowed to, right?
I've also heard Ramdon has more turbulence because of the matting but whatever.. who knows..

the mating on mine are great. I don't see any problems. Actually, I've got a few pics on my digital camera. I just don't know how to post them. If somebody told me how I'll go put them up right now to give a comparison. Not saying the car sound is inferior in any way, just saying I am very happy with my random tech's.

You can post your pics by chossing the Attach file at the bottom of your reply page. Choose Browse, and find you pic file, then attach it. Just make sure the file is not to big, or it will not be able to be posted.

ok, i have stock 2.5 inch pipe, im trying to hook up the 3 inch flowmaster to it. What 3 inch cat should i buy? There is going to have to be a reducer before the cat to go from 2.5 to 3 inch. What do u recommend?

I believe the number of the Carsound Cat I put on my car was 94019 (See the first post in this thread for more...). I have had no complaints with this cat. It came with a 2.5" adaptor.

I'm going to be puttin the dynomax ultra flo catback on my car in september (Gettin it for my birthday), and i was thinking about possibly replacing the cat while we have the exhaust off. I'm pretty clueless about cats though so if anyone can fill me in please do so.
My main question is, is there any specific size cat that i need so that it will fit perfectly into my exhaust setup (which i guess would be 2 1/4 inches to the cat, but the dynomax system is 2 1/2 inches) without having to cut/trim the intermediate pipe of my new exhaust??
