heat damage if headers not coated?
I'm thinking about buying a set of hooker shorties but don't feel like paying the extra money to get them jet hot coated. Do I have to worry about the headers giving off enough heat to do any damage like melting my spark plug wire boots? Are there any ohter things that I should be concerned about?

There are affordable alternatives to having the headers coated by Jethot, some better than others. Your biggest concern should be that by just taking the headers out of the box an slapping them on, the protective paint (it's nothing better than walmart satin black) will burn off the 1st start and from there the headers will commence rusting away.
Techline and Eastwood are 2 places I'd look at 1st for a high temp coating/paint. I'll even go as far as saying high heat spray bombs (stick with flat black for best holdout durabilty IMO) are better than nothing if you're not going to spring for a descent coating.

there is also header wrap. i hear its not the best but its good for shielding heat, but i do not think it protects very well seeing how it voids most header warranties

nothing will burn as long as it's not making contact. i've had my edelbrocks uncoated now for months without any problems. i dunno how much of a difference it makes temperature wise but you can spray several coats of the 1200* paint before installing. i did that to mine and the paint is still there. also helps with appearance. main reason why i did it.

You can buy the "ceramic" 1300 degree spray paint @ your local auto parts store. Sand the headers or have them sand blasted put on 2 healthy coats and if you have an electric oven NOT GAS!
cure the paint @ 350 degress for 30 mins or so . This method should hold up for a while loner than 99 cent satin paint. We do this on some of our 2 stroke dirt bike pipes and it has done pretty well considering it came from a can!
