exhaust/emissions

I noticed a loose wire on my passenger side LG4. Plugged it into my air managment valve and started my car and drove it. It ran bad and backfired repeatly. Talked to certified mech who said this is done often and futher said this could burn out my check valves. The air management valve or air diverter valve cost 477.00 at a local GM dealer. I'm hopeing this is not the problem but maybe the air pump or check valves. Mn. does'nt have emissions testing but I rather not take air out. What will happen if problem goes
unfixed. egr failure?.please help me with any kind of advice.

I fixed the problem. I replaced one of the check valves. I knew it was bad because I could'nt blow through the valve in the direction of the air flow being that they are one way valves.
