Is 3" exhaust too big?
Hi All,
I am trying to figure out what I am doing for my exhaust system for my LS1 thirdgen.
The 2001 engine is stock with the exception of cam, springs, and pushrods. No head porting yet, headers or power adders.
Unfurtunltely, I need to run cats. I was considering 3" pipe, cats, etc. from the engine all the way back. Is this overkill for this setup? Since I can not run headers, I was hoping to make up for some of the restriction on the back side.
All thoughts appreciated.
BILL

3 inch is not too big for an LS1. in fact its on the smaller side of LS1 exhausts. some people are running 4 inch setups on stock motors and not losing any power...:hail:

I dont think it will be too big. Why dont you just get the mufflex y pipe and catback. On my heads/cam LS1 with bolt ons I am running PPC headers, which are the grot design, with a 3 inch y pipe into a 3.5 inch single exhaust back to a crossflow muffler with dual 3 inch outlets. I will be getting dual 3 inch cutouts soon as well.

Go with the 3" at least. Anything smaller would almost be choking the engine.

Back to the topic, on my 01" SS I'm running the PPC LT's as mentioned above with a 3" "Y" with metallic cats into a Corsa 3" cat back. 3" is by no means too big unless you're talking about ground clearance issues. Mine is lowered 1.5" so I defintely didn't want to go any bigger. Hope this helps

Thanks for the pictures. I will go with 3" if I can clear it. Otherwise I will go 2.75 or 2.5 until I get past the tail shaft and go 3" out to the back.
