Header owners only please....

What headers do you have and how was the install and subsequent performance gain. I am interested in TPI cars with single CAT. I was looking at the Edelbrock TES or the Hooker Super Comps but haven't heard about others like the Dynomax and Flowtechs.....

Also I am interested in headers that come with a Ypipe or one is available for them.

Thanks

I have run through many searches on this board, but in all honesty it's long to sift through the endless drab from fellas that have nothing of any importance to say. I want responses from actual owners/installers of headers.

I find that a majority of people on boards like this don't actually qualify there statements with any real world experience. When asked for ETs most people give estimates of what they hope their car will do. When asked about aftermarket parts most people repeat what they might of overheard or mistakenly heard. All this makes it difficult to find fact based opinions.

I will be purchasing a set of headers after the holidays so I would like to make as informed a decision as possible. Talking to existing or previous owners not futur owner of headers can help me make that decision.

Edel TES here, easy install, I wouldn't buy them again though, if I had to buy shorties again, I'd try Hooker 2055s.

Poncho, I fully understand what you mean about reading endless posts. I've been reading header posts for over a month now and find good and bad about every single header brand. Seems like the install goes good for some people and not for others. I'm very interested in the Edlebrock TES, but there seems to be the least complaint about the hooker 2055's. The hookers coated are $560 from jet hot, while the nickle coated Edelbrock's are $341 from Jeg's. That's a major difference in price, but from the general consensus the hookers seem to be the best, and it seems like almost everyone that has bought uncoated headers regrets it.

Anyway, that's what I've come up with reading the hundreds of post that I've read. Good luck choosing headers.

there is a set of Hookers that come with a Y-pipe about $350 uncoated, something like $500 coated
headmans don't come with a Y-pipe (but a Y does go for $100)
how long it takes? I don't know I'll tell you on wed.
also I'll give you times on the 4th. ran the car stock about a week ago and will do it with the below mods on the 4th.

Has anyone tried these? They are only 1 1/2" with 2 1/2" collectors but might be enough for my application...I am going to use the Vortec heads. Are they new? Summit has them for $200 with a yPipe

I am a strong supporter of Hookers. lol Like the 2210 LT's

Now for a legitimate question. Do the cast iron vortec heads have D shaped exhaust ports like the fastburns. If so you have to be careful choosing your headers.

I have the edel TES, but I don't like them much. The Y pipe it came with sucks (I made a new one) . . . Ok, the headers arn't that bad, but I'm replaying them with Hooker long tubes when I finish my 350.

Poncho-I hadn't seen the flow tech emissions header before that fit our cars. Good find. I looked them up at the summit web site and for coated it's $327.39. But, they are back ordered. That's the problem I run into with summit all the time. When summit is out of stock, jeg's has it in stock. Although I checked the jeg's catalog and they are not listed. Maybe I'll give them a call and see if they have them. $327 is a good price for coated if it's truly a ceramic coating they used on them.

actually, to be fair, i have heard some problems with SLP as well. but, they weren't necessarily quality issues...more of a fit and finish problem. for example, i have heard that if you take 10 sets of headers, you may have like 3 different sets, as far as size goes. but with edelbrock, i think they are all the SAME sizes, which means that they fit the way that they are supposed to.

I'm happy w/ my Flowtechs. They're a good header, especially for the money. They slipped right in. Thier y-pipe is crappy though. I didn't use it, I had one built using a Flowmaster y where the cat was. The Flowtech Y is just like the factory. It kinda makes a "T" on the passenger's side. Mine are just the steel ones, but thier coated headers are HTC coated.

I have SLPs and the install took about 10hrs. Im not a huge fan of the 1.75 primarys but only 2.25 collectors tho. No SOTP difference felt, but they made my car sound faster. The only numbers I have are combined with other mods. Stock my 350 did 6.4 gtech 0-60 and with CAI, full exhaust, better tires, and a 2800 stall dropped me to 5.5 on the same road, same ambient comditions.

What about the Hedmans

Anyone using these:

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...62&prmenbr=361

Don't go by the pic....these are a shorty style and the Y-pipe is here:

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...53&prmenbr=361

These look perfect...they don't have A.I.R. or an oxygen sensor but I imagine you can install the bung for the oxygen sensor and voila!!

Price is right, Hedman has a good reputation, what do you think?

Those headers and y-pipe are fine if you don't have an emissions visual inspection (assuming single cat). However, I don't believe they have the O2 fitting, so if you need that (looks like you do), you either need to order them with it, or have one welded in after you get them.

If you want a complete system, go for 68481 (single cat) or 68491 (dual cat).

I decided from the git-go to get the nickle coated Edelbrock's , because I've ran the uncoated before. I'm satisfied with mine and would buy them again. The bolts on the manifold are a b**ch to get at, but thats almost expected with any headers, as well as being aware of where you run your plug wires.

No probs with the Y-pipe. Fits snugly underneath and doesn't rattle.

Oh - and I just got my Hooker super comp Catback the other day from Jeg's, along with a Weiand action plus intake.

I hope it fits OK.

- thought I'd share.

oh yeah...one thing that i absolutely HATED about my edelbrock's were the bolts. they were VERY hard to get to. on my SLPs, i use allen head bolts, and they are much easier to get to.

i have the edlebrock shorties and y pipe uncoated and wished I had spent extra for the coating. Install not real bad, the passenger side leaves little room to work and as a previous post stated use the allen head bolts for better access. I wrapped mine with header wrap and sealed with silicone spray. So far so good and yes I defiantly noticed difference. Of course I gutted the cat and have flowmaster muffler and very heavy modified tpi 355 runs 13.8 @102 pretty consistant. Before mods with 350 and mild cam no posi and factory exhaust 14.4 @ 95 mph. Just a reminder, have or learn patience and have an extra hand holding header up while you or them starts bolts. It will help you from cussing the wallpaper off the walls. And just remember that this pain will have great results afterwards so I told myself.

I have the TES edelbrock headers and am happy with them except for the fact they are not coated. I would definately get them coated if I bought them again. Also, they fit fine.....Just a little too close to the A/C suitcase....burned a hole right through it and had to repair the hole and make a shield to protect it. The horsepower gain was also VERY noticeable on my moderately modified engine.
