Smog legal with no air-injection cat?
Has anyone kept their car smog legal by scraping the air injection system, and replacing the cat with one that doesn't need air injection? I'm not sure how many GM's are like this now, but as an example my dad's Ford Aerostar van has the 4L V6 and has no air injection on the cats. I thought this a a good idea. would clean up the engine area .. Thoughts please.. would this work? Thanks

My '84 van doesn't have A.I.R. at the cat, but it's non-feedback, so the A.I.R. is full-time at the exhaust manifolds.
My FWD V6 cars (Bonneville, Lumina) don't have any A.I.R. system at all.
But, GM smog certified your car with the EPA using the A.I.R. system at the manifolds for open-loop operation, and at the cat for closed-loop. So, by law, you don't have any other choice.
What you can get by with during emissions inspection/testing - that's a whole 'nuther story...
