Not sure if you can do that. But I am thinking no. Something to look into is a high tourque starter. They are pricey, but they are half the size and weigh so with that and a heat sheild that should all but eliminate the problem.

I figured not. Im looking into a high torque starter but I want to try a remoter solenoid first. Do you know anything about those. Im not quite sure how it would work but I think I get the concept.

I know a buddy of mine did it on his 70 goat. But out side of that I am lost. Have you tried any kid of heat shields or wraps? I am thinking about going with headers myself and I would like not to have this problem.

Actually I have 2 heat shields on the damn thing and it still wont start when it gets hot. Im mystified as to why it still does it. And the worst thing is that I dont even have headers!!! I have a 89 305 5 spd and thats the only major problem. Its starting to get to me. when it gets hot it wont even click or anything. I can either jump start it or wait a while and then it will start. I dont get it?????

Like my sig says, I have a 88 5 speed bird. It sounds like to me that it is more than a heat problem. If you can jump it, when it is hot, it sounds like a power problem. Is the batterie still good? What aobut the connections to the starter its self. loose, dirty, crappy wires, things like that. But you may still be right about a heat problem, I just know our cars are alot alike in that aspect and I don't have any probelms with my starter. How old is your starter and where did you get it?

Most likely its your starter solenoid and not the starter itself that is the problem....get a remote mount soleniod kit from Summit for $25 and your problem will be solved.

How hard are they to install, and will it solve the problem with header heat?
