383 stroker 450hp just installed!!!

BYE!BYE! LO3 ...hello 383 ....This is a much bigger project
than i expected it to be! I finally threw out that tbi and put in a
nice edlebrock 750 cfm performer! Just to let you guys know
this conversion is a very time consuming thing to do! Damn computer controlled motors! This was started in end of december of 2001 and everything was installed except for my gauges. I'm hoping i will dip into the very high 11's once everything is smoothed out. There were some things i did that some might consider overkill but i basically put in top of the line parts to be able to handle the horsepower. Some things i put in are:
global wests tubular weld on subframe connectors,
Jegsters tubular rear control arms with polyurethane bushings,
b&m megashifter
7 sport comp. autometer guages including a 5" monster tach.
aluminum driveshaft with loop
beefed up 700r4 with 2600 9" converter
edelbrock tes headers , hollowed cat
BeCool aluminum radiator 2 1" cores,
Goodyear high milar hoses,
3" Borla cat back tuneable muffler
Motor includes:
350 4 bolt main block bored .030" over, align honed mains , scat steel stroker 400 crank with 350 journals. arp 195,000 psi tensile strength rod bolts, block decked , aluminum edelbrock performer heads 2.02" intake 1.60" exhaust valves, heavy duty valves springs and retainers, edelbrock performer rpm intake manifold, edelbrock 750cfm performer carb.Keith black hyperuetic pistons, moly rings, hardened pushrods, half inch lift edelbrock cam , guideplates..etc.....450 hp dynoed at flywheel.

So you posted mainly to bad mouth TBI on TBI board. Good call. Congrats on the big engine swap. I'm sorry you went to carb.

have you driven the car yet? i am wondering what your drive is like.. i had a carb once when i was younger i hated it.. my first car was a chevy truck with a worked engine and carb i hated started it in the morning... i am just owndering if carbs have improved since then? wont your gas mileage drop also? i am not trying to flame i am a curious guy trying to inquire about carb...
what made you go carb over TPI.. if i did any swap i would go to TPI for the low end torque thats where its all at...until then i will stay fuel injected no matter what the rep. is of tbi..

look out.

Your post sounded very critical...To quote: "I finally threw out that tbi and...".

My thinking is always diverted friend We like to keep the flame contests to the rice-boys and posers so settle down.

I'm not down with TPI..a MPFI system that was designed for a 305 or smaller displacement would really hurt a 383. Plus the fact that the injectors fire in batches doesnt really appeal to me. IMO the best intake would be the '94 up LT1 intake.

as long as we're civil, it won't be locked. People should know how to swap out TBI if they wish. There is a tech article on the main page I believe.

ok i am lookin to swap out my 305 TBI for a carbed 350. i'm only lookin for high 12's low 13's. from wut i understand the engine will bolt rigth up in place of the 305 and all i need is an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. of course i will need new ignition and a dist. but thats obvious. ok so please let me know if i have missed anything. also how is carb with alll around drivin if i just wake up start the car and let it warm up for ten mins be4 i leave for school i should be fine right? i plan on usein an electric choke carb. thanks

Why would anyone want to ditch fuel injection and go to carb? Even though it is the TBI why? Carbed is so woefully inefficient it's crazy. I love my TPI and it can easily support a 383. bigger injectors, intake, runners mroe fuel pressure you're good to go.

Well, a carb from recent times gets me 20 m.p.g with my 383, I only got 25 with my t.b.i. 305, now thats inefficient. No, really not trying to start an argument, but carbs are only as inefficient as their tuners. Carbs are more capable of making power than any factory issued fuel injection, and that is a fact. Besides for about $300 you can have a new carb and tune it for free, whereas with a built engine with t.p.i. you could spend $300 on chip burning and still not be right, that doesn't even include the price of injectors and better runners, etc. If you build a good engine and swap from carb to tbi you would lose at most 2 m.p.g. and I doubt it would be that much.

I'm not wanting to come down on the performance potential of TPI or TBI. But the cost comparison to a carb setup makes it worth the performance increase to me. My whole induction cost me $360 including the dist. kit. That would get me a set of runners if I was lucky had I stayed with the TPI. For me, its easier to tune, and faster. I know some of the TPI guys are going faster than I am, but they took a lot of time to learn there needed setup, and they poured more money into there car. Nothing wrong with that. I just don't want to go that route.

Some interesting stuff here guys...ok..the reason i went to carb is that i really didnt want to put in a whole new harness (pretty simple of an excuse ?) heehehehe...I just wanted to keep the whole conversion simple..and basically thought an easier and less expensive conversion would be the carb route. But then again to each his own eh? By the way i am having valvetrain problems right now and im getting the motor taken out and reshipped back to the machine shop so this project is getting prolonged. Driving this car is very fun considering not alot of people do up thirdgen's around my way. I must say i am probably the only one in my neighborhood with such a ride! I also love it when people see the RS badges and do a double take!

cool man... 383's are awesome! Thats what i wanna do in my camaro. I think a carb is easier to work on, i mean, if some chip blows or, i dunno the puter is whacked you gotta take it to a shop unless you know your stuff
