326 Pontiac.
#2
I just bought a 326 Pontiac engine for 25 bucks. Complete with an HEI dizzy to starter. Is this worth it to put it. It'll need a rebuild but. . . Are these good engines? How does it compare to a 305? Will it bolt in? It is a complete and running engine. Will any transmission bolt up to this thing? Thanks.

with the 2bbl carb it is rated at 250hp( i think thats net hp)
using desktop dyno 2000 I ran a combo through porting the heads and a mild cam with a 4 barrel carb with a dual plane manifold it came out with 275hp and 350ft lbs of torque at the flywheel. Definately seems like an improvement over a 305 and any transmission with a BOP bellhousing will bolt up to it.

Its no problem. I opened the posts and all of them were completely blank... really weird.
Anyways, yea for 25 bucks you cant go wrong in picking it up. However, its going to take some work to install it as its not really a direct fit sorta deal. Search for posts on Pontiac swaps and thats what you will need to do, the 326 is no different than the rest as far as swapping goes.

The May Engine Tech issue of High Performance Pontiac contains a nice two page article on the practicality of building up a poncho 326-350.very informative. If you don't have access to a back issue, I can fax it to ya. Just e-mail me the number.

ditto that for 25$ you cant go wrong, you can make some pretty decent power out of them also, they have the long 3.75 stroke so they make sh*tloads of torque and use all the regualr pontiac parts so you can get cams, intakes, roller rockers,...etc. for cheap. would also look great sitting under the hood! insted of the ho-hum cookie cutter 350 chevys you see under everyone and there mothers hood.

Don't build the 326! They have the same stroke as a 400 Pontiac, but they have a puny bore. It is cheaper to build a 400, since 326 pistons are expensive. Pontiac 389, 400, 421, 428, and 455s are excellent engines, and each would be a much better choice.
