Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
Crunk it yesterday and broke in. Runs fantastic, very reppy in comparison to what it was. Replacing heater core and putting in a new posi while we have it in the shop. Maybe end next week I will be driving her around.
Lil backfiring back through TBI at high RPMs. Hopefully don't have to change fuel pump to get up to correct pressure. Running a 15lb spring IIRC and was hoping I was getting atleast 13-14lb atleast... probably wishful thinking. As im reaching 3500 RPMs im losing some AMPS so new Alternator ordered. Also temp switch not working only way to run fans at the moment is to turn a/c on. I will get it figured out getting closer.
My friend hooked me up an aftermarket fan switch On 200deg Off 180 deg ,. Also we found out luckily I already have an upgraded fuel pump being it put out almost 60PSI. Fuel Filter was super clogged up and for now everything is looking good will bring it home in a day or two if nothing else goes on with it. Finally getting close since ive quit deer hunting every day Lol.
Wish now I had went with FITECH or something I could tune easier. Backfiring under high throttle spitting sputtering aggrevating stupid TBI. 46mm built unit with 15lb spring on a full exhaust L98 should be just about right? Guess I will get an AFPR and play with that some next. Have played with initial timing from 4-8 deg and at 8 it seemed happiest but still not where it should be. Figured with such a mild engine this would be pretty much plug and play.
Which system were you tuning with again? I took a quick look back and I didn't see it. Are you tuning with a wide band? The fuel pressure probably can be close to stock and adjust fueling in the tables. Initial spark means the most at cranking. The computer can take the rest of the advance after that. Wide band and datalog would put you in the area you need to be. If you're burning chips then I'd talk to Tuned Performance and he can probably help you with the last bit.
Tuned Performance burned me a chip. Im beginning to wonder if im shorting out somewhere, bad distributor, could even be a cracked plug. So many things it could be its just time consuming and im not a patient person.
I take it you're not datalogging anything? That makes it a bit more blind. I like your plug thought, check each plug. Might aim you at your cause quickly if it's an individual cylinder
After checking every plug, every wire, pretty much everything I decided to see if the valves were adjusted properly... Found a broken valvespring!!! Brand new yes probably cheap Chinese steel. $2 fix now seems to be purring like a kitten here in the the shop but can't drive her tonight too much rain. Now on to my alternator still draining down -GREMLINS!!! Hate em! Getting closer though
Have to find an aluminum lid now as the black doesn't match and im not fond of chrome. Ive never liked the way this lid sits on top of the coil wires so im thinking of trying another air cleaner or moving the location of the coil itself.
Driving it around some now. Car runs strong. I don't think the bored upgraded TBI unit loses much if any to the TPI setup as it revs 5200-5400rpm effortlessly. I need to adjust my transmission cable a bit, have a bit of work to do on the bumper as it was knicked up some in the engine swap, swap the new posi in at some point, and a small header leak ive been fighting. Other than that I am very pleased and glad I actually kept it simple with the TBI. Big shot out to Brian at Tuned Performance for a spot on tune for the upgraded TBI engine. Daylight and dark from the old trusty L03 I suspect it picked up 75-85 hp at the flywheel easily.

Given that's 1000rpm worth of horsepower, I'm sure it making more peak hp. Whether the average #s are higher or not would need a swap and back to back dynos and a giant waste of time. The midrange on a tpi would probably still be higher but it really doesn't matter if you're not missing it now. Nice work.

Im just glad it pulls as good as it does. I really didn't know if TBI would hamper it much or not. Ive never heard hardly anything good about TBI and only knew personally the difference between an LB9 and L03 which was huge. I do have header+ full exhaust, higher stall converter, gears etc but pretty much the engine is a stock L98 and it "feels" as good as any STOCK L98 Ive driven in F-Cars or automatic Vetttes for that matter. I wasn't after a 400hp racing engine I just wanted a good strong cruiser and that's what I wound up with, im very happy with it.
Beautiful weather down south! Logged over 100 miles on her this weekend-Zero Issues. Can't wait til big car show next weekend maybe a n hour drive from here.
