Buy car with swapped engine or not!
Hello!
I'm going to look at and maybe buy a 1982 trans am here in Sweden. this one: https://www.blocket.se/vastmanland/P....htm?ca=10&w=2
It has a SB 350, 4-bolted truck block, zz4 kolvs, edelbrock, -connection rods??, -intake manifold och -carburetor, gearbox 700 with lock up bootstraped gearbox by mister bootstrap in US (i don't even know what that means). is the engine number LG22219 the original or this new one? does the new engine fall under the same engine family as LGG5,7V8NT87?
The seller clames that the engine has about 400hp can this be true? Will the car hold for all that power? The car also has new paint, new tires, new electric wireing, new brakes, axle differential. He wants 8900 dollars for it normal price would be about 5000 dollars, car has 9700 miles on it engine and gearbox about 100 (with normal condition) is it worth the extra money? indentety nr AW87H9CL512358
Pardon my English it's not my native language.
best regards Peter

Welcome to TGO Peter.
The car is definitely customized. The hood, ground effects and rear spoiler are not correct for an '82. Looks like it has aftermarket racing seats. Can't give you any other insight on the interior because there's only one picture.
The engine isn't original. A 350 engine wasn't available in the '82 Trans Am. While it's possible to get 400 hp out of a 350 I doubt that's true. Ask if he has a dyno sheet to back up this claim. The 350 is a gen 1 small block engine. Never heard of a bootstrap gearbox. The tranny is probably a 700R4 which could be original.
If this car really only has 9700 original miles then it's a shame he completely customized it. Price is subjective. It's not a bad price if you like what has been done to the car. Never hurts to try and negotiating with him to get it down a little.
Good luck.

Re: Buy car with swapped engine or not!
Thank's for the answer I know alot of things are replaced in and on the car. But will it work or brake? Must the 350 engine come from a gen 1? He (the seller) claims that he has a dyno sheet test that shows 368 hp but that was before he changed to a bigger carburetor. So now it should be higher and he guesses about 400hp. The car has 97000 miles on it (9700 was my mistake). The gear box /tranny?) is refurbished but i dont know if it's orginal. If it is original can it handel tht kind of power. I would really like to know what the fact that it's bootstraped means the seller says it makes the automatic gearbox to shift faster so it may accelerate faster.

I would want to see dyno sheets if he claims he has them. The rear end would probably be the weak link in this car but with normal tires it should be OK. If you like it then buy it otherwise keep looking he probably spent more than he is asking

He has spent about 4400 on engine 3200 on gearbox 3000 on paint, 1000 on tires and rims etc so easy over 11000 dollar. But that's not my problem

Re: Buy car with swapped engine or not!
Hello again!
I now have looked at the car. The car looks and sounds great but if I compare it to my manual camaro z28-99 it's really slow even thoug it should have more hp. You could see that the engine had some new parts and he had a lot of reciepts on engine parts. In fact I think it was like driving my v6 firebird-87 that should have 143hp.. What is more likely the car hasn't got many hp and newer had, it has but it has to be more modified to get the power to the wheels, The engine or something else is giving up. Ireally like the look of the 82-89 cars but I really want it to be faster then a camaro z28-98-02. And this was the first I saw that seemed to meet my needs (I have looked for 10 years now). I'm so disappointed (the seller sended me a text where he lowered the price to 7500 but I don't feel like its worth that when its so slow....

Yea a lot of 400hp engines are no where near 400hp. Everybody who builds a 350 seems to think it makes 400hp with crappy stock heads and no tuning
