BB 472 CI possible project

So I have come across a 1973 caddi with the gm 501 472 ci big block. All complete with auto transmission as well. The car is shyt but everything else is there. It was parked 20 years ago after small radiator leak n power stearing went out.

The old fella told me I can take the entire car for 400$ this is the 220hp version I believe and does spin freely. So im wondering if this whould be a good project. I will scrap the car n just keep the motor probably. I whould like to build the motor for 500hp with a standard tranny behind it.

What is the best way to go about this. Im wanting advice on the price and what dirrection I should take the build. Very possibly may go into a third gen iroc but not sure yet. May search for a good nova or chevelle body.

What are some thoughts? Thanks.

Re: BB 472 CI possible project

First off a 73 caddy would not have a 472 or 500. Probably. 425 or smaller.
The dizzy wont fit under the hood and the exhaust would have to be custom as there are no direct fit headers for this application.

If would be a lot cheaper nd a hell of a lot easier to use a chevy bbc for this not the big caddy motor.

I personally would pass on the idea but the car is probably worth about that much just in scrap so you might be able to sell the good stuff and scrap the body and make a couple bucks

Edit****
I bewildered and read 63 not 73. Ok it would have either the 472 or the 500. Either one would be the low output option. My previous opinion stands but just want ted to fix this error. Keep in mind caddy parts are not as common an will cost more so building a 500 horse caddy will be more expensive than a 500 horse bbc.

Re: BB 472 CI possible project

The only difference between a 472 and a 500 is the stroke. There's nothing external on the engine other than decals that can tell you the displacement.

Performance Caddy parts are not cheap. Everything you want to know about making power with a Caddy can be found here.

Want to have something different under the hood, go for it. Take lots of pictures to document the swap.

Is it going to be easy or economical to do the conversion, absolutely not. It would be a lot easier and cheaper to drop in a BBC.

Re: BB 472 CI possible project

472s were last used in '69, IIRC, while the 500 was still offered in '73. Either way, to adapt a manual transmission will be a costly hassle, and most of the cost will be a flywheel, as those big Cadillac V8s never came with anything other than a TH400. Mounting and the oilpan will have to be changed, and then you gotta figure out headers. Home-porting those heads won't support 500 HP, either. Seriously, this is honestly not worth it. Better to get a 454, if not an LQ9. The LQ9 with a cam, and existing headers, oilpan, and mounts will not only do 500 HP, but will give triple the MPG, and weigh far less, plus a T56 bolts right up. And to have 500 HP, it ends up cheaper than the 454, let alone the big Cad.
