REBUILDING MY 350 SMALL BLOCK FOR MY 86 IROC

hey guys need some serious help i got this 350 small block carbureted engine on my 350 which has a lot of leaks so i have planned on rebuilding or overhauling the whole engine. while in the process im planning on upgrading it a bit for a little power . so far researching a lot on the net i have found out that i could get some used gm vortec heads and slap them on with some newvalve and rocker arms on the block and gain some good power i also plan on changing the cam but really confused about them any help with all this would be really cool and ya im newbie here so hi guys please help me out .

Vortec heads are a good start, but if you want a better cam the heads have to have work done to them, in order to handle valve lift and duration of a performance cam.

The first thing I always tell people when they ask about building an engine is this......

What's your budget?

Then you can be guided in the best bang for your buck.

Re: REBUILDING MY 350 SMALL BLOCK FOR MY 86 IROC

i had decided to give the car for overhauling this month were they would take the whole engine apart replace everything brand new but stock jus the heads would be from a gm vortec and im gonna give it for cleaning and polishing and stuff and then replace the intake with a gm vortec intake manifold also
would that give me some gain in the horses

If the heads are off a truck they aren't the same as the Vortec car heads. They are actually worse than your stock heads. Just because they are center bolt heads, doesn't mean they're the good Vortec heads.

Re: REBUILDING MY 350 SMALL BLOCK FOR MY 86 IROC

Ignore that last post.

There's no such thing as "Vortec car heads"; the ONLY "Vortec" heads are off of trucks. 96 - 2000 model ones with the 350 to be specific. The casting numbers are 906 and 062. No other casting numbers are "Vortec", so accept no substitutes, no "almost as good as", no "early Vortec", no (my personal favorite way of sliding the buzzword in without actually lying) "pre-Vortec". They're easy to spot because instead of having 6 bolts on each side, they only have 4 (2 at each end, around the water passages), which are straight vertical instead of being at the same angle as the head surface; and, the intake ports are about ¼" higher up on the head, toward the valve cover, than on older heads.

You can see in the picture how different the intake port location is; and, where somebody attempted to graunch a normal intake onto the Vortec heads by drilling the old bolt pattern in the heads, and you can also see the 2 CORRECT bolt holes, located kind of up higher and a little farther apart.

Yes they will give you more HP than any other stock heads, all else being equal.

trucks. 96 - 2000 model ones with the 350 to be specific.
Doesn't matter if it's a Suburban, Silverado, or even a van; they all came with the same motors. "Early" means different things to different people so leave that out of the description. Go by the date and source, then verify by casting number. Either they ARE those heads, or they ARE NOT. No in-between.

No, you don't want the intake that came with them. It is specific to a particularly unsuitable fuel injection system called CPFI. You don't want it.

Those heads typically run best with cams that have a substantially larger exh lobe than int lobe. Reason being, the shift in the port location gave the INTAKE side all this TERRIFIC FLOW, by way of straightening out the port to give it a more direct shot at the valve; but, the exhaust port is the same sucky design as any other stock exh port. Using a larger lobe on that side acts as a "crutch" to help all that stuff that managed to get INTO the cyl via the wonderful intake, get back OUT through the restrictive exhaust. Cams like the Comp XE and Lunati Voodoo series are perfect for them.
