bbc intake manifolds that fit stock rs hoods

I have a gen v 454 that i am getting ready to swap in but i am not sure what intake manifolds work with the stock hood
i have been looking at this one gm# 3963569 i read it will cost about 25 hp
i found this one gm# 3933163
but those are both rectangle ports
i am thinking i want to run edelbrock 60499 heads but they are oval port and i am not sure of an oval port intake that will fit so i would like some help and pics if you can on some of your setups i want to get a more informed easy to read thread for others also trying to piece this swap together

probably run ebelbrock performer flat cam
H8012 Patriot headers (mid length)
850cfm carb
max 5500rpms
looking for around 525hp max

Rule #1 of the carbureted BBC swap into a 3rd gen - cowl hood.

The engine is too tall, regardless of the intake, to fit under a stock hood. You might be able to if you don't use an air cleaner and use the crappiest low-profile intake out there. The former will mean a short life for the engine, the latter will mean performance below what a 350 spending the same money would get you.

Re: bbc intake manifolds that fit stock rs hoods

I did fit a tall-deck 427 under the stock hood of my '84 T/A, with no air filter, and with a Carter AFB, but on a relatively tall iron dual-plane intake manifold from a dump truck. The '74 'vette intake would fit, but won't be good for power. Similar deal with an Edelbrock Torker. At least it's lighter than the '74, and has a little potential if you get it extrude honed then run a power adder. The Carter / Edelbrock is about 1/4" shorter than a typical Holley / Demon, BTW. If you just want the instant torque of big cubes, by all means use the '74 'vette intake. It'll bolt up to any "peanut-port" heads, and also bolts right up to the '96-'00 Vortec 7400. But if you're wanting big power under a stock hood, then go find an LSx to play with.

Re: bbc intake manifolds that fit stock rs hoods

i would have liked an lsx but i got this motor for almost nothing. I am going for the big torque but even 425hp would be good. The problem is i painted the car and spent to much money on the hood I have so there is no changing it. Thanks for the info on the carb heights. This is the air filter i have and plan to use to pull air through my scoop http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ed...FcZFMgodm3IA5g so as long as i can fit this i will be good. it has the stock tbi intake but that looks to tall. this would be a steet car/ garage queen usually to busy to drive in the summer

That filter is a cheap piece of crap, Thin foam rubber is not a very good filter media..... I had one cost me a engine rebuild.

Re: bbc intake manifolds that fit stock rs hoods

Had a Victor O 4500 on mine with a 1/2" spacer, no air cleaner fit under flat hood, but good luck getting any air into the carb.

You NEED a cowl hood and a REAL air cleaner.

If you are determined to keep the flat hood, you could go efi, but then that would cost more then getting a cowl hood and painting it.

Nothing wrong with that aur cleaner. It won't do miracles for power, but it won't destroy the engine, either. B&M used to have a trick T-horn thing that had a filter on each side of the carb. No idea if it'd fit, or flow enough, but it sure looks different. I'd suggest you build an aluminum enclosure for the air cleaner, with your own cold-air ducting. It is easier to tune a carb that's always getting air heated by the headers and the radiator, but that hurts power and invites detonation. You should have no difficulty getting that Edelbrock filter under a stock hood. It'll hold up better if you put house window screening in your custom cold-air ducting. Put some chicken cage wire in front to protect the screening from any big debris.

Big difference between using it on a street machine versus trying to win the Baja 1000. If you live on a 2-mile dirt lane, you might want to make a sock for it. Take the sock off at the dragstrip. I've owned and long-term-run ( ran? ) 3, no complaints.

Re: bbc intake manifolds that fit stock rs hoods

thanks for all the replies. i had that triangle air cleaner on there for about 7-8 years on my sbc. i only like it because it sits in the hole i cut through my hood. but mabee i will change the foam out for some new stuff.
I think i am going with the 569 intake and epoxy it to round ports or not i have to do some more digging on that wouldn't want a chunk of epoxy trying to fix through a valve

Re: bbc intake manifolds that fit stock rs hoods

I don't know BB intakes by casting number, but costing you 25 HP isn't a flat number regardless pf combo. If it costs 25 HP on a 250 HP 454, it could cost you 75+ HP on a 500 HP build. Why cut a hole in the hood for that air cleaner on a small-block? Were you trying a tunnel-ram? The hole won't be in the right place, switching from SB to BB means the hole will now be too far rearward, unless you go to the greater hassle of moving the engine back. And why would you get a butchered hood painted? Or care if the new combo fits under a stock hood? Once it's butchered, it's not stock.

its the ls6 (450hp) 454 intake 1970. you have to take a look at my albums to see the hood. when it was painted i wasen't thinking of a bbc. but a few years later...
