327 in 84 z28

ok so lets start this off by saying im poor. lol. now im going on to say i could fairly easily get a hold of a 68 327 block. i would really love to throw this stock 270hp lil monster into my 84 z28 and mod it out for some better numbers. but i live in california. does anyone have any tips/advice for getting past the smog *****. is this at all feasable. what if i want to drive it over to the track i know i might be able to pull a couple of tricks with the manifold n heads to make it look like the stock 305. but a quick look at the casting number would reveal the 68 block. i feel stupid. but does anyone have any suggestions/advice

Yes... don't.

That "270 HP monster" is a turd. It was the low-perf sedan slug of its day. If "rated" using the "ratings" system introduced in about 1972, would "rate" about 190 HP.

It's likely in need of a rebuild; and it costs EXACTLY the same to rebuild a 262.5, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 327, 350, or 400. Figure you'll have about $1500 in the short block, MINIMUM. If you have to touch the short block, there's no sense in sinking your $1500 into that one, when you can go to the junkyard and get a 96-2000 350 core with the factory roller cam stuff, FAR better machine work and QC, and FAR less wear and tear, often for less than $100.

The 68 heads don't have the place to bolt your accessories to, if they're still the 68 ones. You can't use em in your car.

The smog inspectors won't generally check the block casting unless they suspect something. I learned that the hard way when I lived out there myself; I stupided out and rebuilt the 305 in my car for fear of that, to replace the 400 that was in it at the time, then they didn't even look; and I just got sick as I watched the $1500 I had spent on it, go down the drain pointlessly.

Altogether, not a good plan.

Re: 327 in 84 z28

IF the 327 short-block assembly is usable as-is, then putting your 305 heads on it would add a little performance for cheap.

And paint it black. Getting to the casting number is more trouble than it's worth for them, so as long as all of the equipment is there, and it sniffs clean, they aren't going to take a second look.

Re: 327 in 84 z28

i think because of the year difference you may need a certain flexplate. for instance i dont think the 327 would bolt up to my 700r4 without a different tooth flex plate. anyways. my cousin is going to keep his 327 and give me his 350 from his other truck. it should be a late 80s gm crate motor rated at 245 horses. witch is great because the heads will be similar. i can bolt all of my accessories to it no problem. im not sure what motor this is but if anyone has any helpful hints or tips lemme know. right now i have the whole front end gutted. im gonna prep the bay for paint and spray it before i throw my 305 back in it. hoping to drop a couple pounds worth of crap as well. im saving the 350 for when i get it built up to awesome...

Nothing really beneficial about this swap especially in your state.. Your better off to enjoy the car than to do this swap.....

Re: 327 in 84 z28

Have you thought about modifying your 305? Going to a 327 isnt really that many more cubes, and you wouldnt have to deal with the whole swap ect. Just because its a 305 doesnt mean its useless

Maybe not. Just real close to it...

Unless of course, the short block needs work; then it IS completely useless. Negatively useful in fact. (it's in the way of something else that IS useful and requires extra work to clear the path)

the stock flexplate on the 327 would probably work with the 700r4 as long as it has the proper torque converter bolt pattern on it.. if not, the stock 305 flexplate bolts up. Chevy V8 (and inline 6) engines are sweet this way- the only oddballs in the 2 piece rear main seal engines are the 400 and 454.. everything else used interchangeable flywheels/flexplates. wann put a 409 in your car? it bolts to the same mounts and uses the same flywheel. i've never seen a 409 in a third gen, so someone needs to do this.
