my first engine build, need some help

hello i currently have my 350 out of my 84 camaro, looking to add some performance to it. i have a set of vortec heads that are currently rusty, they came from an engine sitting in a field at a friends house so i took them. i am thinking to get them checked out and hot tanked if they are useable. if not i will find another set. anyways, i was wondering what the stock gm components are good to for horsepower? motor was rebuilt before i got it, ran good didnt burn any oil, cylinders dont have any major scores so i would like to use this assembly if it will do the job. i am on a tight budget, but can spend more money if i have to over time.

if the stock components can handle the power i would like to shoot for 400 horse, and around 400 foot pounts of torque. im looking for some cheap build combinations that utilize the vortec heads. now dont get me wrong, ive been lurking in the shadows of this forum doing as much reading as i can for a while now, but i need more specific and direct help then i can get from searching the forums. the first 350 of atillas best builds has caught my interest, would this work for my motor? do i need to change pistons to match the compression? my motor is an 84 by the way, with the 4 bolt main. oh and will all those parts listed work on an 84 350? if not what is another good combination? im just lost as to what parts work for which motor and so on, overthinking has started to confuse me.

i have a couple pictures ill try to upload later, the upload window taht came up said uploading photos and took a really long time so i said screw it haha i will probably have alot more questions to come to, thanks in advance

I didn't bother to go back to look at the build you're talking about, but most likely it will work. If you copy the details, that would help.

Stock SBC stuff will handle 400 HP without a problem. The weakest link is the rod bolts, so it's usually a good idea to keep RPMs down below 5500 (which makes it a little harder to get to 400 HP), or replace the rod bolts with ARP. They recommend having the rods resized after replacing the rod bolts, but you may get by without having to do that.

Whether or not you have to change the pistons depends upon what was put in your engine when it was rebuilt.

Re: my first engine build, need some help

i would not have a problem going arp bolts, im sorry i did not specify what pistons were in the motor, they have 4 reliefs on the top of them, two ontop and two on the bottom. ill get some pictures of it soon two show them. unless theres a casting number or something to identify the piston? they are also already 30 over. ill copy and paste the build im talking about next

Re: my first engine build, need some help

Carbureted 350
This 350 is notable for making 385 ft-lbs from 2600 to 5400.
That's better than GMPP's FB385 does at it's peak. And this
is so much cheaper, despite being all GM, except for the
intake manifold. Of course headers must match
your car, but this was tested with 1.625" long-tubes. So for
third gens, that means Hedman.
Best of all, this runs on regular unleaded, it has dished pistons.
To copy this, you'll need the following parts:
GM p.n. 12530282 crate engine, or junkyard equivalent
Edelbrock p.n. 7516 intake manifold
GMPP HOT cam kit, p.n. 12480002
competitionproducts.com p.n. 4718 cutter
" 4732 arbor
Fel-Pro 1094 head gaskets
and your choice of 750-cfm carb.
For that you get these dyno results:

RPM TQ HP

2600 385 191
2800 392 209
3000 399 228
3200 409 249
3400 419 272
3600 425 291
3800 425 307
4000 425 323
4200 428 342
4400 425 356
4600 420 368
4800 415 380
5000 407 387
5200 397 393
5400 385 396
5600 375 401
5800 360 397
6000 338 386

The Hedman headers run from the plain $223 p.n. 68460 to the
$659 fully coated p.n. 66469 offerings.
You can get another 10 horses by polishing the exhaust ports.
And yet another 10 by switching valves to these
: http://www.competitionproducts.com/S...ductinfo/8430/ ,with
30-degree back cuts from your local machine shop.

this is the build im talking about from atillas best builds
