Need help.. engine question

Alright, I hope this is the right area to post this. So I bought this 89 IROC 5.7 in Michigan. Had a shop that supposedly knew what they were doing work on it and they rebuilt the orginal engine, bored it 30 over, put 202 heads etc on it.. Since I've gotten the car back, nothing but issues.. the shop also will not supply receipts or paperwork on what cam they upgraded it too, the type of pistons, the exact comp ratio etc. So I'm having a nightmare. As of right now, the car supposedly is set to 10.2 Comp\ratio.. but with a step above stock cam I've been informed won't work. I live in Northern AZ (Prescott Valley) and don't seem to have alot of camaro fans out here or friends for that matter that are into cars. Never had a problem like this before with a shop giving a customer the finger. Anyone have any ideas? I was trying to find the block number, but I can't locate that as well just to make sure he put my 350 block back into my car.. at this point I'm kinda at the point that I'm Questioning EVERYTHING he did being I've already found a ton of mistakes.. =\

Re: Need help.. engine question

There should be a partial engine vin number on the front passenger side of the engine. Look behind the AC pump. There is a flat spot between the front end of the head and the ac pump or alternator (forget which one is on that side) Use some WD40 to clean up so you can read it. It should read something like v0216awk. Awk is the suffix code for an 89 camaro/firebird 350 TPI engine. As far your problems, I think your computer needs tuned whenever you do a cam change. But I dont anything about that stuff.

This what looks like, You should still be able to see it even with your Ac and power steering pump on the engine

Re: Need help.. engine question

Alright, I used your picture as a reference, thou the guy who built the engine painted it orange.. and its totally covered.. and I don't even see any number impressions.. soo.. without taking and somehow scraping it off without damaging the tag gonna be a bit hard. Anyother way to tell if its a 350 block? I heard the starter bolts up different on the 350 then a 305.. something about the bolts are staggered? And supposedly the guy put in a Cam that did not require a chip or a modification.. though I do want to agree with you. It seems like the car rev's super slow.. and with it running rich.. blah.. so mad and sad at the same time and just frustrated.

Re: Need help.. engine question

Externally 305's and 350's are the same. Ive never heard of the starter bolts being different. I got a 305 and 350 in the garage I'll check them later to see if there are different. There are more engine numbers on the back where the engine meets the transmission. These numbers are a lot bigger and should be able to read them even if they are painted over. However they are difficult to see with the engine in the car. There is an 8 digit engine code. I think its on the passenger side. I think it should start with 140*****. Then On the other side will have the engine size in liters (5.7). I would find out if you need a custom chip. Are you getting any engine codes? Did you check your timing and all the basics?

Re: Need help.. engine question

If it has iron heads and a near stock camshaft, that is a lot of compression for 87 octave, especially some of the bad fuel that's out there. . Make sure it has 91+ octane fuel, I would run 93-94 if you have it out there. Goodluck, it sucks to spend money and be completely disappointed. I've been there many times. Keep working at it, this board is your best tool to work with. Tons and tons of information.

SBC block could have 2 bolt holes in one of 2 different patterns ( straight or offset ) or 3 holes to fit both size flywheels used

Re: Need help.. engine question

The engine currently is throwing no codes what so ever. What I need.. is someone with experience to live close so they can listen to the noise as I can't really explain it properly. The engine\tranny are in the car so I'm not sure if I can get to the numbers near the tranny. The engine was supposed to have 202 Ported and polished heads, with a 3 angle valve cut, performance springs, etc.. but I won't know about any of that unless I pull them off the block totally.. =\ I might be able to get some thing to try and get the paint off the block near the AC, but its gonna be a tight fit and a task and a half without pulling the pump etc. If anyone else has any ideas please feel free to msg me or post..

I see what you mean. I never noticed there were 3 bolt holes before.
Like autoroc said, try higher octane fuel. Is pinging or knocking?

Re: Need help.. engine question

Hmmm.. well right now I'm running 91-92 Octaine and with a booster just to help. Just got the filter replaced. Its like a ping\knock type thing. Not like a rod knock or anything to that extent. I'm just wondering if he has the wrong profile cam in their, and with a high compression the fuel isn't leaving before its burnted creating internal combustion problems..?

All the time or only under load?
Is timing set correct?

Re: Need help.. engine question

Mainly under load. The engine was set at 13.7 for the timing. I had the shop set it back to the normal which is 6 degrees BTDC.
