Fuel Injection for a BBC

I'm planning on building a turbo'd 496 for one of my Camaro's. What is a cheap good junkyard pull fuel injection system for a BBC? My plan is to use a mega squirt for the computer.

Re: Fuel Injection for a BBC

Make a list of ALL the FI systems that have ever been used on BBC.

Using the criteria of your choice, determine whether they are (a) "good" and/or (b) "cheeeeep" and/or (c) laying around in junkyards.

I think you'll find that the complete list is EXTREMELY short ( I can think of maybe 3), even before you start eliminating the ones that aren't (a)"good" (b) "cheeeeeeeeeep" and (c) plentiful. I think you'll then find that not many are "good" from a performance standpoint. "Cheeep" .... well, on this BBS, unless it was FREE, it probably still wouldn't even make the cut on that, since people here would still p*** and moan about what it costs to buy new gaskets for it; but you'll have to be the judge of that for yourself.

Given the amount of money you'll have tied up in any real-world turbo system (since this will obviously be your first) that actually functions better than a good N/A setup costing a third as much, you'll most likely find that WHATEVER you have to spend on an intake manifold, is a DROP IN THE BUCKET and not worth fretting more than a couple of seconds over. It won't significantly alter the total cost of the project by more than a couple of percent, IF THAT.

I'd suggest a single plane carb intake modified for FI, such as this one http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-35500/ except that you wouldn't need the whole setup; only the manifold, fuel rails, and maybe the TB but probably not (since most likely it would be easier to fit a horiz-draft TB and an elbow, than a down-draft TB). I have no clue whether the individual pieces can be separated, you'd need to talk to Vic I guess.

I'd also suggest, instead of starting out your search at "cheeeeeeep", you might want to research WHAT WORKS first. Might be smart for example to find out what people with BB trucks are using for similar setups and what obstacles they have encountered. "Cheeeeeeeeeeeep" might become a little more nearly in focus at that point.

Re: Fuel Injection for a BBC

The only stock big block FI setups I know of are TBI and vortec. TBI is the cheapest and easiest to find parts for but it isn't the best in performance. And the vortec big block setup is MPFI but the only intake manifold available is the stock one, and they're not easy to find. But if you do find one that may be the answer.

But your best bet is an aftermarket kit if your willing to drop that kind of cash.

Re: Fuel Injection for a BBC

Just exploring different options at this point from mild to wild. I've already decided that I'm done with carbs and from now on will only do fuel injected set ups. So far the answers seem to be that no stock BBC fuel injection set up has much support or potential. So I'd have to either buy an aftermarket one or make one myself. Perhaps the answer to my goals is to change over to a LSx set up and go from there.

Re: Fuel Injection for a BBC

Once you get into high HP, most everything is aftermarket anyways. for SBC, HSR, mini-ram, etc.

Even for lsx motors, the high end HP stuff is aftermarket also, but even better because of the coil on plug ignition.

For BBC accel thruster (search 92 rs 454 build).

holley, FAST, Edelbrock, accel.

FAST has a bolt on FI set up that can be used on a carb'd intake manifold. Hot Rod magazine did the test on a moderate 454. Just need to find the issue....
