350 casting numbers.
ok so, i'm lookin to drop the tired 305 outta my iroc and pick up a 350 off a guy in central illinois (where i'm from). he sent me some pics and it seems to be together, though terribly dirty (i keep my motors clean ) he sent me some numbers supposedly off of the pad on the front (v0916bcks and 16n516855) for 75 bucks, i am pretty close to saying screw it and picking it up just for the practice when i rebuild it also, anyone want some vortec heads? he only wants 200 for em and as far as i know they're in amazing shape.

Those aren't the casting numbers. Get a picture of the numbers cast behind the cylinders above the bell housing mount. Then compare them with those listed in the sticky in the top section of this forum.
Why wouldn't you use the Vortec heads?

Re: 350 casting numbers.
i didn't mean casting, i meant "pad" numbers or the serial numbers. i don't have the cash at this point and time, i may try and talk him down and if he takes a flat 225 for motor and heads then i'm buyin em. i just won't be able to open up the secondaries on my car as much for a couple weeks lol. the guy failed to listen to me when i asked him to send me the casting numbers on the back of the block.

Re: 350 casting numbers.
v0916bcks is close but not correct for a good code.
V = Flint engine plant
0916 = Sept 16
Suffix code is usually 3 letters and sometimes 2 but I've never seen 4.
Assuming it's CKS, it could be a 350 from a 1972, 73 or 77 car.
16n516855 is the last part of the car's VIN number. The first 6 is the year code which is probably 1976 so best guess is the engine is a 77 350 since date code above is in September. Engine was built in 1976 and installed in a 1977 car at the end of 1976.
It probably needs a complete rebuild. Price out what it would cost to do a complete rebuild. Price out what a complete rebuilt engine will cost. The $75 for the core probably isn't worth it. Bearings, gaskets, seals, rings and machine work to rebuild an engine can easily be within reach of the price of a new engine. Add in new pistons, cam, intake, heads like the Vortecs you want to use and the price can easily exceed the price of a new engine.
It all depends what needs to be done to the engine and what you want to do to it.
