Cayuga/TMP ( only 1 hr away), I have been a spectator for the most part, haven't taken a car down that track in many years. I will most definately run mine as soon as its done, I hope by mid/end of spring..... lots to do!

I should be running around St Thomas, Brand Bend, and Cayuga helping a buddy.
You run TMP?

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

TMP is closest but I hit them all in a season.
Opening day is April 2nd at Cayuga. Not much time now.

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

New chassis. 86 Sport Coupe. Fresh engine, Dana 44, bigger brakes and few more suspension bits.
I missed all of last years racing season after the engine in the old IROC got a little tired. I figured if I'm going to rebuild, I might as well finish the project and start with a clean slate. I retired the IROC and finally finished a roller I picked up in Virginia almost 3 years ago.

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

"What intake are you planning to run with the 233/233?"

I will run the one that is on the car now. It is the First base, modded SLP runners and modded factory plenum. The long tube runner project is taking longer than I thought it would waiting on other people such as the welder.

The hybrid First needs to be opened up. With the new motor and the rpms I will be turning it will be a slight restriction. I plan on shifting somewhere between 6500 and 7000 rpm depending on where the power falls off. The dyno results will tell the tale.

Regarding my 233/233 camshaft. I am running 1.65 rockers so the lift is .594"/.594". I talked to Mike Jones before going with the 1.65 rocker arms. I wanted to make sure everything would be ok with them.

Edit: One more thing regarding the intake system on the car now. The runners are most likely 1-2" to short to take advantage of the 3rd harmonic wave. There is a posibility that the siamese runners may make the single runners act like they are little longer. Again I will find out on the dyno.

Interesting.. Have you tried the FIRST upper? I would love to see you get those rpms out of a TPI system.
Which brand, and how long are the runners you are getting built?

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

"Have you tried the FIRST upper?"

No, but I would love to. I would make my own runners with a 2"ID. In fact when I put the large long tube runner project on the car it will give me a chance to port out the First manifold and make the entrance from the runners 2"ID. I will open up the SLP runners to 2"ID to match. I might have to add some weld, not sure until I have them in my hands once again.

On the other end of the First intake manifold where it meets the head I will "almost" port match it to my AFR 195 heads. Then gradually taper the port up to the 2"ID at the other end. That will get rid of the restriction that is there now. So if for some odd reason the large long tube runner project does not work I can fall back on this one.

I wonder how a 2" runner will do? Its nice to see you mess around.
I will have to see how close the FIRST intake port is to the AFR head port once I get it. I dont really want to get into any porting this year!

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

The First out of the box narrows down where it meets the head. The reason for that is so that it matches a stock head better. None the less it still flows pretty good. In fact better than anything else out of the box for our cars. It does not take much work to open that area up a little bigger.

Regarding the 2" diameter entrance that is what a program I use called "PipeMax" calls for. Also the First can be opened up that big.

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

Decided to pull the engine today, started at noon and had her out by 9pm, with breaks, lunch, and dinners in between!
Every bolt was a dream to remove as none broke or hesitated!
Two items I feel are a must; load leveler, and a piece of smooth plywood at the rad support to protect, guide, and kick the engine/trans up and over since I was lift limited by my garage door height when in the open position.
I love working on clean cars!!
Cant wait to get the new engine in. I should see my intake in one week.

Lol, cool... Good place for others to see it too!
Did you go with the Ledfoot?

I would be nice to find one with both coolant and trans cooler in one, like the factory but bigger.
I was hoping my factory rad would cool it off. I will never know if I dont try it.

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

Just trying to pick out the right converter..... with my powerband and 3.23 gear it seems that 2400-2800 would work ok for my street application, I may try to split the difference and get a 2600 rpm stall. What do you guys think?
I want the Vigilante converter, and I ordered the Pro-built "Pro Street kit" From Dana today.

Is there a better knock sensor that I can use in place of a factory type?
I know my 305 Tpi sensor will not work, but before buying a 350 unit I thought I may upgrade considering the motor is not even a 350.

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

I got my intake!!
Time to finish the engine. The FIRST Tpi intake is an absolute monster next to the stock tpi, looks alone, its beautiful and I cant wait to get it on the engine to see how it works.
Here is a few comparison photos, the injectors are bosch III 42lbs

Lol, grab some popcorn and read along!
Interesting thread in the middle pages, for sure!

It fits somewhere in middle i would say, but emphasizing on the torque band of the factory TPI. I hope to maintain the numbers I saw when testing with the carb and Vic Junior, albeit at a lower rpm.
Not sure what it would do at the top versus the HSR.

Can't wait to see the results. By the way I am running 32# injectors with a 72% duty cycle. So your 42 pounders should cover anything.

Please keep us informed. I am extremely interested in your injector size. I was told this would be the size I need for my 383.

I was a little worried that they would be too large? But on the recommendation of injectors plus and most other injector calculators, the 42lbs seem to be what I need.
I feel confident that they will work well for me.

is that 32 at your fuel pressure? I would have thought you needed closer to 36's... thats good to know, i need some injectors for my LS1 when i cam it up...looking for 420whp-430whp

I ran 42's on my 383 but dont know the duty cycle. I'm sure it was 50-60% at most. At the time I think they were on sale and cheaper than the 36's so i was all in

Modding the daily driver are you? lol.

To keep within the 80% duty cycle i was looking at over 36lbs, so i figured may as well go up to 42's since there is not much in between. That should put me at close to 75%.

32-36 for a 420 rwhp engine sounds low? just make the jump to 42..... You know it wont stop at 420 hp!

Oh it should stop at 420whp... mild 230 deg cam and trying to get a set of LS6 heads to match the LS6 intake...nothing special. I may get 36-42's rated at LSX pressure of 58 psi

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

Yes, that is at 4 bar. With the new intake I might have to up the injector size once again. We will see when I get it on the dyno this Summer.

I got a new simulation program called DynoSim5 which is an upgrade to DynoSim with a lot of new features. Low and behold they have an induction category under sport compact called "Long Tube Runners, Common Plenum, Max-Flow. It is based on the Porsche 928 intake system which is very, very, very similar to the L98 TPI system.

With the old DynoSim it said it was best to use a single plane high-flow to duplicate a modded TPI system with aftermarket parts. That was not to bad if I deducted 5% to get it in the ball park. If I used single plane high-flow with DynoSim5 it is pretty much what one would expect. With my air flow rates I should be able to get 550hp on an engine dyno. That probably is not that far off.

Now when I enter in the "long tube runners, common plenum, max-flow" the torque drops off some what down low but the horsepower increases even more. I think they must be considering the 2nd harmonic wave tuning aspect. That would not be taken into consideration with the single plane. If that is true I will need new injectors. At the 550hp level I have enough wiggle room with the present injector duty cycle and the fuel air ratio to make that.

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

Intake was trial fitted..... Needs to be cut .050-.060 off the sides.
When I ordered the intake we had them raise and oval the holes abit, but its not enough as the ports are high on top and bottom. Anyone else need to cut their intake?

Hopefully I get the engine back this week, since the trans parts are on route, then, maybe I can start posting some fun stuff!

I had to shave some off the sides of my Victor intake, I went almost .100" total since the casting was far from square :-/

Pretty common actually, especially if your block was zero-decked.

I had to slot the center bolt holes in my TPI base too. it turned out to be way more than I expected to have to.

Nice! Going to be a very strong motor with FIRST TPI. good hp, but great torque! FIRST will compliment that cam rpm range perfectly

Yes, should work nice!
Looking to pick it up Monday, Tuesday. I may go ahead and drop the engine in first while trans is getting done, it may be two weeks before i get the tranny back.
I have lots of work ahead to plumb the FIRST in.

We took off about .100 from the intake base in total. .030 at FIRST, an another .065 at the shop

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

Decent weekend so far! Got most of the sensors, dizzy, plugs, etc on the motor and dropped it in. So far, so good.
I was really worried about the installed height of the motor, the FIRST is only about 1 inch higher in total but looks huge when installed, looked like it would hit the hood. After looking at the profile of the hood I think I will be okay!
Now the fun part part of plumbing all coolant, vacuum, fuel lines and accessories! Amazing that one little change to aftermarket such as the intake can change so much!
Trial fitted the headers, and they should clear okay.

Here's a few pictures of the engine in the bay, looks nice.

Does anyone have a close up picture or schematic of the bracket set up for v-belt accessory system?

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

Its starting to look fast! At least you're still sticking with a stock type intake! Getting everything to fit up to my Victor is proving to be a challenge.

I bet it is tougher, the First has its challenges also!
I am having a tough time with the multi bracket accessory garbage, the headers and intake are going to make me fight these brackets until the end!
It does not want to line up, the header pipes are in the way of brackets, I have to cut and weld brackets and add spacers, which I do NOT like.
I think I am going to hold off and get the serp set up, i have always prefered that, plus I may have found a setup locally for a good price. Its is the GM parts direct kit #12497698. Anyone try this kit?

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

I used brackets I bought off ebay. I had to make an idler pulley bracket, and the alignment wasn't quite right. I had to make some new bolt spacers to make everything line up right. Overall I spent less than $100 on the accessory brackets, but there was quite a few hours of work involved.

I don't have AC or the smog pump either, so that made things easier.

Re: afr 195 383 tpi build.

Just an update.
Tranny is rebuilt and ready to go in, waiting on the stall! couple days I think.
Learned today, pulling fuel tank for pump replacement sucks hardballs, The job got done, but I hated it.

Upgraded to Serpentine belt system! Wow, soooo much better and cleaner than V belt, Couple problems with the support brackets and the Dyno Don headers, nothing a little banging. grinding, couple spacers couldn't fix. Need to fab up one braket from Alt to top of intake and thats done.

Everything is working well and going with no big issues.

Hopefully this weekend:
- install air pump/pollution equip
-cooling system and all accessory plumbing back in
-clean up from fuel tank re&re
-Start harness install

Going to be a busy weekend but should have things back in order soon! Assuming things go well, I would say a couple more weeks for first crank, can't wait
