V-belt on my 350

Ok, I sold my 305 complete to someone.

Im picking up my flat tappet 350 from a 93-94 suburban minus the accessories tomorrow for $160.

The person I sold my 305 to said he'll give me his v-belt setup with all accessories from his 350 engine off of a 70's truck he is swapping my 305 into for free.

My questions are:

Is the v-belt assembly compatible?

Is a v-belt assembly a downgrade? because I always hear about serpentine conversions?

Also, on a different note. I have only $150 left in my camaro budget right now, what is a good thing to spend it on before I put engine back in my car. What would be a good upgrade. Should I go for chip burning software, a cam, better heads, exhaust components, etc. but I want to throw it in while the engine is out

Re: V-belt on my 350

Heads are out - way more than $150.
Cam probably over that too.
Headers definitely over.
Last time I looked chip software was like $300 for the stuff to do your own.

$150 will barely get that 350 installed and running - better keep it in hand until AFTER the swap is complete and working. You'll need a 350 TBI chip and a 350 knock sensor at minimum. Might need 350 injectors or larger as well - that in itself will eat up $150 in a flash. New motor mounts would be a good idea while it's out. Trust me - $150 will get nickeled and dimed away before you even get the block in the car.

Oh - v-belt is NOT a downgrade - 1000hp cars were running on v-belts long before you were born. And it should go in fine. The alternator might need wiring since your alt has a connector on it that may not match the truck alternator. Might have different sized connectors on the p/s pump that will have to be reconciled. See - $150 shot to hell already!

Another note - might not be legal to do what your doing - Cali emissions very strict - have to maintain original year or newer emissions equipment - have you checked the legality of this? Would be a PITA to find out AFTER that they won't inspect you, thus no plates and no driving!

I figured I should save the 150 to get the car running, I ended up buying a hoist since the guy took his back after giving it to me with the 350.

As for emissions, here in san diego ,they do a visual and a sniffer. The visual is a complete joke, if they see my car is a chevy, they read that its TBI and see that it has an air cleaner up top then I pass the visual, no questions asked, no lying involved. If they were, in fact, to ask if its the original motor, I could tell them "no, its from a 93 suburban." AND THEY WOULD STILL PASS ME. I know its illegal to have an engine in the car that doesnt belong to the model of your car but a small block chevy is a small block chevy no matter how you look at it.

The point I am trying to make is, camaro didnt come with the LO5, but it did come with a 350 tbi.

I am also swapping all accessories over frommy LO3 to my LO5, so it'll still have all original smog equipment. Everything else going in the car willbe CARB certified, I hate looking over my shoulders when driving a modified car. Out here in san diego, they will pull you over and make you pop the hood if your car has so much as an exhaust leak.

Re: V-belt on my 350

BTW, they do have edelbrock cam kits with a decent lift for 120-150 so cams arent completely out of the question. I wanted to wait and get the comp cam xe262 or xe268.

Re: V-belt on my 350

You should be fine then.

No 3rd gen ever had a 350 TBI - just 305's. The only 350's were TPI. Caprice had 350 TBI, as well as some trucks. But I see your point - just wanted to make sure you were aware of the Cali emissions - I've never been to Cali myself - after hearing about the emissions nightmares, I'm glad to be on the other coast!

Geez - did you see the new law about the Happy Meals? Your lawmakers out there ate too many bean sprouts in the 80's! I'd think with everything going on, they'd have bigger fish to fry!

wth? they got a new law on happy meals? what is it?

I think the reason they make all these laws and charge so much tax out here because this is a tourist state and they are either trying to get tourists for everything they got or they're trying to run out anyone with no money to make california seem nicer/cleaner. Oh well I love it out here, I dont think I'll leave unless I finally get down to joining the military

Re: V-belt on my 350

Some people actually prefer V-belt setups. One reason why people prefer serpentine in third gens is because belt replacement is much easier. Beyond that it makes the ATI Procharger a direct bolt on as it was only designed to work with 88 and up TPI cars with serpentine belt systems.

BTW I hate California. Too many stupid laws, BS social programs, stupid hippies, idiot celebrities, dumb *** emissions laws and RETARDED gun laws. It is if the governing bodies in that state are more devoid of logical thought than normal politicians and that's scary. Its a damned nanny state. I can go on and on but yeah, I think that will do.

Re: V-belt on my 350

its funny when a movie star/ body builder, who has a hard time speaking english becomes a governer. Oh well, california's falling into the ocean anyway, who cares who runs it, its going to go down no matter what

Re: V-belt on my 350

Arnold had nothing to do with it. California had all the issues I mentioned long before he was elected.

Re: V-belt on my 350

I wasnt saying its arnolds fault, Im saying we live in a messed up state if the PEOPLE elect an actor as a governer. I was underage, so I didnt vote. Like they say on the radio everyday here in san diego "do you part to take care of your state, every vote makes a difference"

Could you imagine how many people went into the booth and jokingly marked arnold for governer, then when the woke up the next morning in a panic because he actually got elected.
