Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

ok so i have a 92 camaro and took out my tpi 305 to put in a 350 carb, non emm. so i obviously gutted out my harrness from the passinger side. therfore my factroy pump wont work. I bought eletric summit pump and reg. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G3136-2/. Now i installed the pump were the factory fuel filter is. and hooked up a summit relay kit and its own switch. It RUNS fine givin me about 5 psi like i set it to. But its SOOOOOOO LOAD like a winding noise. Im wondering if its that load because i didnt take out factory pump. just bypassed it. i really dont feel like taking out factory pump. Either, the pump i bought is just EXTREMELY LOAD, or defective, or should i wire in the factory pump, or just go to mechanical. They forums i read on this kind of engine swap stated that i can just bypass it. Please give me some INFO!

Sooner or later, you'll be dropping the tank. Why not just do it right the first time and drop it now? You can't "bypass" the in-tank pump without dropping the tank.

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

All the aftermarket inline pumps are loud like that. It'll also die from overworking itself trying to suck fuel though the dead in-tank pump. As mentioned, you'll have to drop the tank to get rid of the in-tank pump - otherwise you'll keep ruining these inline pumps from overworking them sucking through that dead pump. Either drop the tank, or cut the trunk access hole, and replace in-tank pump with a carb feed.

BTW - it would have been $20 less to just use the intank pump and the Mallory 4309 regulator like everyone recommends.

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

The pump will run without any of the pass side wiring - it'll run off the oil pressure sending unit - it sends direct battery voltage to the pump the instant it recognizes oil pressure.

Now I have no idea what wires you cut where - but originally there was 3 wires to the Oil Pressure Sending Unit (OPSU) - 1 ran the oil pressure guage, the other two worked the fuel pump - 1 from battery to OPSU, other from OPSU to fuel pump. So - if you can find those you can use them, add in a relay (any $5 autoparts store relay will work), and run the factory pump....

Cut the two larger wires on the OPSU (located just above the oil filter) - they should be orange and red. Now test each one - one has 12v the other has nothing. Now, run these to the relay on the power out side of the relay. Run a ground to the relay, and a hot-in-run wire.

What you want is:

turn key on, the hot-in-run wire "energizes" the relay, this connects the orange wire with the red wire, sending 12v to the fuel pump. turn key off, hot-in-run turns off, relay no longer energized, thus no power to the fuel pump.

Regardless of the relay, your engine will start and run. The OPSU senses oil pressure when car is cranked, and turns on the fuel pump as long as there is over like 3psi oil pressure.

BUT ... the OPSU can go bad, as has happened to me. This can either 1) make the fuel pump not run at all because the OPSU is not sensing the oil pressure, or 2) make the fuel pump run constantly regardless of the ignition key because the OPSU 'thinks' it's sensing oil pressure when there is none.

That's why I utilized the wires from the OPSU harness, and utilized the OEM fuel pump relay - that way my fuel pump will only ever run with the key on, and the there's only 2 pieces of the puzzle that can ever go bad - either the 10amp fuse tucked in the fenderwell behind the battery, or the relay - both of which are easily accessible at ANY auto parts store.

Hope that helps!

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

This is all they did to mine when they swapped it to a carbed setup with a mechanical pump..

seemed to work well for at least 10 years, it's getting switched back to a regular pump though.

ok i get it..but i dont think i have them wires....but i do have a summit relay kid..let me take some pics n post them....p.s i put a 77 motor in it...so the oil pressure unit it on top of the manifold...not on the side like the newer motors. but i will have pic later today

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

Ok here are some pics....not the greatist but think you will get the idea!

so i got my car gutted...only harness intact. So i belive the senser (long senser that goes in side of block) was connected to like a brown red or orange and tan. That was spliced off because only the tan was in the driver side harness. which is now conected to the block on the back...i also found the gray wire that was once one of the relay wires. Hope the pics will help

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

ok now ill post one more pics of wires coming out dash. and the second one will be of the piece of the summit one i hooked up to my summit pump...one wires goes to pump to relay. then a yellow wire from the relay to a swich i installed and then the thick red gauge wire goes to this piece..which i dont know what this is ..then to the battery.

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

Since the OPSU wires are gone, I guess that won't work. You'll have to figure this one out based on what ya got left over.

However you decide to get fuel out of the tank and to the carb, you'll need to do something about that in-tank pump - trying to draw through it will just kill any other pump sooner or later.

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

im prob gonna take eletric out n put a basic mechanical pump. only because its quite. if i do decide cut my truck n take it out. What do i put on the top of the tank..to fill the whole....and what kind of hoses go into the pump....but i wanna just hook up the factory one with pump...easier just need to know how to do it! to make it alittle easier to undertand...these are the wires i still have...i went by this chart.

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

purple82ta has a picture of what you need. that pipe thats connected to the other one with a brass (union, highpressure) fitting is where the pump in the tank once was. now that there is only a pipe there, you can use an inline electric pump or the block machanical pump..

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

If your looking for a way to re-wire your factory pump when the harness is gone, you can do it this way. You can use this oil pressure safety switch. You run power into it, then when the oil pressure gets to 7 PSI it turns on and allows power to flow. Run that wire to your relay to turn on the pump. If you pull the back seat out you'll see where the wires are that go to the fuel pump. I dont remember the colors but there is only 3 wires and 1 is for the fuel level guage. You can trace these wires up to under the dash where you can hook them up to your fuel pump relay you put in.

Re: Do i need to take out factory fuel pump?

yep you can do that, but i wouldnt recomend it without a high to low pres. regulator with a return. i have one, if you do use the factory pump with a carb. let me know,, we can work somethin out for the regulator, mine is not that old , and i used it in my car, it works good , you get adjustment from 2-14 lbs, i ended up pullin my tank and doin the same thing as in purple82ta's picture, now im runnin the pump off the block...or just get a new one.
