engine building, looking for any general suggestions
i am laying out the ground work for the engine in my 84 camaro.
the 350 block is from a 1981 z28. i am wanting to run the L79 327 camshaft (222 duration, .447" of lift) 9.5:1 compression, and a set of vortec heads. also planning on running edelbrock's performer rpm manifold, and a edelbrock 600 carb.
could i get at least 300 horsepower from above combo? i'm shooting for 360. any thoughts or recommendations?
thanks

I have one suggestion:
Don't use that "151" cam!!!!
Look at the specs. It's something like 292° at lash point but only 222° at .005", and only .447" lift. It's very "lazy" by modern standards. I have never seen an engine that came anywhere close to its full potential with that cam in it.
The cam that everybody gets th ebest results out of in conjunction with out-of-the-box Vortecs is the Comp XE268. Compare the specs to that POS cam: 268° vs. 292° (better idle, higher vacuum, better gas mileage); 480" lift vs .447" (more power period); 224°@ .050" vs. 222° @ .050" (same RPM band). Please don't screw up what could otherwise be a perfectly good motor by sliding that lame cam into it.
I can about 110% guarantee that you won't get 300 HP using a 151 cam, let alone 360. I can equally guarantee that your combo plus a set of headers will do 375 HP easily, and with a little extra effort will go over 400.

I second the feelings of the 151 cam. That was a great piece of work in the 70's. It is now just a 30lb pile. Get the Xtreme cam RB83L69 suggested. I know at least 2 magazine buildup articles have had great success with that and Vortec heads. The older "Musclecar" cams are great for an original restoration, but if performance is the goal, pick a performance part. My $.09.

I totally agree Comp Cams are the best. Have had them in many different cars and all different grinds. I have been happy with every one of them. Their products are the best. Call them they will suggest what grind is best for your combo.

thanks a lot, guys. the headers are no prob, i have a set in the car now.
i don't have a book in front of me, what is the powerband of the comp cam you recommended, rb83l69? this car is a summer toy, will be driven often during the summer, except rainy days. i would like to run from idle to about 6 grand. i'll look for sure, but i dont have a book in front of me right now, as i said.

Your combo is very simular to mine
except the cam. if your using the stock
converter you'll be happier with one with less intake duration. Mine is Crane Blue Racer .442"/.465" 214/224 on 112 L/S
It was a lot cheaper than Comp Cams and is a
proven performer. Popular Hotrodding
got 374 HP and over 400Ft/lbs on the dyno
with 1.6 rockers. My car agrees 13.44 @ 104.58 all day By the way they tried the other GM hyd 350/350hp cam and lost hp and torque. You'll need a better valve spring than the stock vortec one but only have to shorten the valve guides .200" and can reuse the stock vortec retainer and valve seal. good luck....
