76 monte carlo to 86 camaro

Hey i was recently in an accident with my 76 monte carlo. It was just deemed totaled. I am wondering if i could take the 327ci from it with its wiring harness and put it in my 86 camaro? Idk if this is a stupid question but i was wondering if everything would be the same. My camaro is currently a 2.8 v6. So if you can help me, it would be greatly apreciated. Thanks.

Yes, it can be done. Read the V6 to V8 swap sticky in the top section of this forum for the basics.

You'll need to do some rewiring to hook up the alternator, gauges, etc. The Monte wiring harness isn't going to help much there, although you can probably graft it into the Camaro harness.

The Monte exhaust manifolds most likely won't fit (good time to upgrade to headers, as they will also take care of dipstick tube interference problems as well). You'll need all new exhaust (as the sticky states).

You'll need to do something about the transmission. Your V6 transmission will be worthless. The Monte transmission will "fit" into the Camaro, but your transmission crossmember, driveshaft, and torque arm won't work with the Monte transmission (most likely a TH350). You can get the parts to make a TH350 work in a Camaro, but it might be cheaper to find a V8 TH700R-4.

I have a weird question. When did you buy the monte carlo and did it have a sticker on the back that said "I have no idea where I'm going"?
if so here I am in it lol

Re: 76 monte carlo to 86 camaro

If that is it (which I bet it is because it is the only 76 I ever saw with a corvette 327) that engine runs like a top except for the fact it has a 2 barrel carb on it. It would bolt down to any v8 mounts pretty easily and you could probably mod the v6 harness to work with it as it has no sensors. If you want help with it or anything let me know, my friend drove that car (I think) for 2 years and had to sell it when he lost his license for awhile and he would love to see that engine again and perhaps help you do the swap or buy the engine from you!

BTW we rent a garage in Weymouth and we have an engine lift and a ton of other tools.

Re: 76 monte carlo to 86 camaro

haha yes it is that monte carlo I just bought it off the guy your friend sold it to. He lived four houses down the street and had to sell it kuz he was moving. Its a really nice car and it still runs beautifully. I crashed into some 2009 F250 who blew through a stop sign..... poor monte.. I have still been driving it, but the insurance company won't let me after its considered totaled. Thats why i was wondering about this swap.

Re: 76 monte carlo to 86 camaro

Also, would you have an idea how much it would cost for the swap? Thanks

Re: 76 monte carlo to 86 camaro

I am 19 and buddy (whos car that was) is 18 and he has done a bunch of swaps and we are just finishing up my swap now. If you didnt want to pay for it and want to come hang out in Weymouth we could do the swap with you if you want. The car would be off the road for awhile, just help us out a bit with our rent and we would love to work on it with you.

Re: 76 monte carlo to 86 camaro

That would be sweet if you wouldn't mind helping once i get the money from the insurance company to get the parts and stuff. How much would you want for helping with the rent? And would you have any guess on what this swap may cost? I don't have too much money at the moment so I'd need to know how much to get. Thanks

Exhaust will probably be your biggest expense. Basically none of the V6 stuff is worth reusing.

You'll need engine mounts (junk yard), and will have to do something about the transmission - if you keep what's in the Monte, you're going to have to spend some money on swap crossmember, torque arm and/or mount, and a longer driveshaft. If you decide to find an overdrive tranny like the Camaro has now, that could be a good chunk of change as well.

Re: 76 monte carlo to 86 camaro

Well we may as well drop it in, during like March or April when its nicer out and we probably wont even need to use the weymouth garage. There is an extremely nice guy who lives out in Norton who has about 13 Camaro parts cars and sells the parts at great prices. You could pick up a tranny for around 75-$100 in good condition there. The tranny that is in the Monte Carlo was rebuilt less than a year ago so you could sell that for pretty good money. I remember we were spinning tires in the snow trying to get it up a hill last winter and it blew 1st and 3rd and would barley go forward.
