Lack of power.......Limp mode?????

well I just got my 305 TPI to 350 TPI swapped T/A back today when i bought the engine I was told it was a '91 L98, but it turns out its not, my car is an 86 (no stock '86 350's) so everyone told me to go for an '89 chip, so I did,

I got the '89 Jet Chip 6 pack, everything runs fine. My check engine light is on and the shop told me it would always be on 'cause of the chip and all. They said it runs really rich (you can smell it) and also sometimes its hard to get started and run (has to warm up kinda even in the summer) but once its run for a few minutes its fine.

I drove it, and its not all I expected, its not slow, but I dont notice much of ANYTHING over my 305 TPI could it be just 'cause i still have stock 2.73's in the rear .......
.....or could my computer be in limp mode, the reason I think it could be in what people call "limp mode" is cause if anyone is fimiliar with the jet chip 6 pack it has 6 setting....economy, towing, stage 1, stage 2, valet, and ant-theft. well no matter what setting it is in it runs the same,,,,,its not supposed to even start in anti-theft, but it does, and runs the same.

Limp mode or 2.73's????? please help

if its in limp mode and the computer isnt compatible with the TPI that still has the cold start injector and sh** like that would i just be able to buy like an '87 350 chip and have the problem solved...I wish there was an '86 350, cause I dont wanna get one custom made.

If your check engine light is on while running, you're likely in limp home as you suspect. You really need a good scan tool like Diacom (my personal fav) to see what the computer is seeing. A simple thing like leaving the EGR disconnected can cause the ECM to throw a hissy fit and not want to play nice.

I'm a little unclear on what you did with an 89 chip. 86s and 89s are slightly different animals. I'd call Jet's tech support and get the REAL truth- not internet bulletin board truth.

I just did a similar swap of a 400 into my brother's GTA in place of the original 350 TPI. ALso swapped on TFS heads a different cam, 32# injectors in place of the stock 22s and a TPIS miniram all at the same time (in other words, a Frankestein). TPIS provided us with custom chip that brought it all together for us. Fired it up last night for the first time- runs good, no check engine light.
