ZZ4 Short Block Emmissions legal??

I am a bit confused.....first...whats the difference between a short block and a long block? Will they both fit? Second...if I just get the ZZ4 block (not crate engine) and get some heads that are 50 state legal...I will pass visual inspection and the sniffer test right? Also, what heads should I go with? I am looking for around 400+ horsepower...or running low 12 to high 11s.

The short block doesn't (technically) have to be smog legal. The difference between a long and short block is:

Short Block = Block, crank, rods, pistons, rings, oil pump/screen. Options are: oil pan, flexplate.

Long Block = (includes short block and options) Heads, lifters, camshaft, timing chain set. Options are: Timing chain cover, damper, intake, distributor, carb, water pump.

As far as passing the sniffer, don't tell the smog tech guy what is in there, just don't go to wild. Stay on the lower end of mild to wild. Heads depends on what setup you are thinking/going to run. The head selection (and other things) will affect what cam you are going to have to get. If you want 400+ HP (or low 12s/ high 11s), you'd better get a very good indunction system, what are you thinking of running?

hey MRZ28HO...thanks for clarifying the long block/short block thing. As far as what i wanted to run....Im thinking the ZZ4 short block, I have NO idea on what head and cam combo to run....edelbrock TPI base, edelbrock runners (?????) and a ported plenum......or maybe the Accel SuperRam if people tell me a modified TPI will be crap. Then finish it up with the odds and ends such as Pulleys and all that, and some SLP headers and 3" exhaust system. Of course I'll be upgrading my suspension to handle all this before I stick in the new engine. Like I said....I want to be pushing 400+ Horsepower (w/out NOS)......or running 11-12s with NOS....but still really good numbers without NOS. Suggestions?
