newbie needs help:)!
I have a loud knocking sound from my '84 birds V6. It wont run long before the check engine light comes on and it stalls..I'm sure the motor is gone although it will turn over and run at idol with the loud rapping sound. My question is this I have a 173ci v6 in it now and i would like to stay with the v6 as i like to use the car for long trips and cruising and want to keep the mpg's good. what motor should i look for that will be a easy swap and bolt up to my 700r4 tranny? The 2.8 dosent have much power so can I look for a 3.1 or 3.5? Can anyone tell me what motor to look for and what car's they might be in ...I have alot of u-pull it's around here and if I can find a low milage wreck with 1 in it that would be sweet. Thanks ahead of time. I gotta get a motor in it soon I can't go without my bird for the summer ;].... P.S.car specks..2.8 V6 carbed..auto 700r4 tranny

Well, Im sure it was a misprint, but the only replacement motors for the 2.8 are 3.1 and 3.4, not 3.5.
If you're up for some simple wiring, you should be able to steal a multiport setup and computer along w/ say a 3.4. I would go w/ the 3.4 based on the increased displacement. You could, for the moment, slap your current carb system on the new motor, but if you also got the MPFI setup, you could at a later date put it on and wire the computer up.
For the 3.4, I would look in early 4th gen f-bodies. Some others, like Lumina, Grand Prix and so on, had the 3.4 also. Just not sure about turning an engine from side to front.
Good look

thanks for the help...just so i have it clear,, a 3.4 from a fourth gen will bolt up to my 84' 700r4? And my carb and man will bolt up to the 3.4 also? And can anyone tell me how hard, if at all it is to make a side motor front?

I believe you'll have trouble with the mechanical fuel pump, as the 3.4l doesn't have the provision for it. You might try asking on the V6 board.
