Time to change 305...So ZZ4, LT1 or ??? which is the easiest swap?

Hi guys it is that time to do a swap. What is the easiest, quickest and most efficient swap. I am changing my 86 305 TPI out to put in a 350. I have access to a 94 caprice lt1 5.7 or i can buy a new zz4 or I can buy a 350 crate............What is the best bang for the buck and the easiest swap?????????

Okay, cool your jets! We're thinking about it.

"Easy", "quick", and "cheap" (okay, you didn't say "cheap" - but you came close) are words not typically associated with engine swaps. That's one reason you've been waiting a whole day for anyone to respond.

As stated in another post, "there's no such thing as a bolt-in". The LT1 would be a nice engine, but it's different from our 3rd gen engines and would need all the control pieces to make it work. Many have done it, perhaps one of them will respond - I'm shooting completely from the hip on this one.

The ZZ4 isn't really a TPI engine, but I have a co-worker who did a ZZ3 TPI swap. He's big into the bucks and is still tweaking it (doesn't have headers on it yet, for instance - wants to clean up his SLP's and get them coated). Aftermarket base & runners, ported plenum, had them all extrude honed to the shaved heads; bigger TB & injectors, ZZ9 cam, roller rockers, etc. He's about .5 sec quicker than his wife's GTA w/cam & rocker, TB change. I wouldn't call him a "bang for buck" guy at this point (one limitation is he's staying emissions legal).

350 crate: Which one? HO? HO Deluxe? Fast Burn 385? Hot Cam 430? Still not TPI engines. Are you planning on sticking with the TPI or going carb?

Are you planning on doing the work yourself, or having it installed?

Another old saying: "How fast do you want to go? All it takes is money."

Thanks for the reply.
I am going to stay TPI for sure, and as you can see that my old 305 runs pretty good numbers. The money is a factor, but for motor's it is not. I am hitting up 2 of my sponsors. 1 is a dealership where I bought a new truck and they owe me a favor (ie crate motor) the other is a salvage yard who sponsor me quite a bit.....the only thing they have that I want is the LT1...

you put in a 350 and your going to need bigger injectors and a different computer or a custom chip. the caprise LT1 has less hp then a camaro. I just can't remember why. I'd say the zz4 but a tpi isn't a hp setup its torque, and falls on its face above 4800 rpm not sure if it will be the best setup. It would be quicker with a carb or a mini-ram setup

I have a ZZ4TPI combo, Edelbrock Hi-Flow intake, SLP runners, SLP headers, ported everything, MSD box. Don't be fooled, the car pulls way past 4800 rpm
I have not been to the track but my last engine, a L98 out of a 92 Z28 ran 13.81. The ZZ4 combo is much faster. Trying to get to the track soon.
However...
I have also been for a ride in a LT1/6spd equipped 92 Camaro. What a blast! Even more fun with when the 100hp shot of laughing gas came in to play.
If you have the time and money, I think a used LT1 would make an excellent choice. There is a little more work involved but that LT1 makes 285hp out of the box with no mods.
"Thats just my opinion, I could be wrong..."
