Oil for new crate engine?
Bout to drop a GM Performance Parts 350 HO crate engine in my dad's project car...anyone read this article in Hot Rod?
http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/e...ech/index.html
Apparently, normal oils are NOT formulated to protect engines with flat tappet camshafts. Since we're replacing the original flat tappet engine because the camshaft wore out (I'm assuming exactly because of using the wrong oil), I'd hate to run the wrong oil in the new crate engine too.
Anyone have any experience with Rotella? What weight do you run, and how many miles are on your engine?

I have a whole heap of experience with this oil http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/hdd.aspx . Been using it in the 396 in the '57 for years. Also used it in an '84 van with Goodwrench replacement 350 that towed a horse trailer for over 10 years. The engine only had about 5k miles on it when we got the van (from my sister's family - they had a dealer install the engine), we put over 75k hard miles on it before selling it. Ran as well (maybe better) when we sold it than it did when we got it.
The key is the amount of ZDDP. What you're looking for are API ratings CI-4+ AND SL. The CI-4+ gets you the ZDDP, and the SL gives you a gasoline rating.
You do NOT want a CJ-4 oil. That's for 2007-up diesels that require reduced ZDDP. Careful what you're getting, not all diesel oils are created equal. And, as the Hot Rod article pointed out, you don't want a GF-4 oil.
