Correct oil pan

I understand that this answer is probably somewhere in here, but honestly I can't find it and it would be SO much easier if someone could just simply answer this, please....
I have the original L98 for the 87 Iroc that I have but the guy I got everything off of swapped the oil pan on the L98 with the one from a 383 crate motor he bought for his other 87 Iroc. So although the L98 now has a brand new oil pan, I am left wondering why this guy would of done this and I'm not very familiar with f bodies as some of you are. The pan that is on the L98 looks like any other SBC pan I have ever seen, so could someone tell/show me what a factory L98 pan looks like, or will I be just fine with a standard SBC pan?
Thanks for any help!

Re: Correct oil pan

Just to add to this....I have an 84 305 "H.O" (yeah right) out of a camaro and the oil pan doesn't look like a standard SBC oil pan, that is the reason I am asking if 3rd gen f bodies require a special pan for any reason because I will be installing this L98 in the 87 Iroc soon and would like to know before I try setting it down in. Thanks.

Re: Correct oil pan

It might be helpful if you posted a picture of the L98 engine/oil pan that you have.

Btw, this is a standard OEM oil pan for a sbc. 3rd gens do not require a special oil pan.

Re: Correct oil pan

Thanks calebzman, in fact the one you show is in fact what I consider a standard SBC oil pan and it is in fact the one on my L98 right now. So I should be good!
I am just a little confused on why my 84 305 has a different style pan on it?
Doesn't matter though, you answered my question.
Thanks again!

L98 is one-piece rear main seal. An '84 305 would be 2-piece rear main seal. That may or may not be what's different about them.

Re: Correct oil pan

^^^^^Thanks, I understand the gaskets changed in about 86 from 2 piece to 1 piece, but I was wondering about the shape of the pan itself. I'm gonna have to take another look at the 84's pan and get a pic, but maybe I was just looking at it wrong (???) but to me I remember it looking like a smashed in the middle hot dog bun if that makes any sense. I'm gonna shut up now...........Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Correct oil pan

Not the gaskets, the rear main seal. The 1 piece RMS and 2 piece RMS pans are different and not interchangeable.

Re: Correct oil pan

I guess I didn't word it completely correct, but yes I do understand the combination of the changed pan/seal.
BTW, I looked at the 305 pan a little better and this whole thread wasn't necessary since I now see that the 305 pan is the same as any other SBC pan I have ever seen. I still don't know why the guy I got the L98 motor from put the brand new GM crate 383 pan on it and put the original one from the L98 on his crate motor (??)
Thanks to everyone for the replies, sorry it was a waste of a thread.
