Question on buying rods for engine build

I am looking at a used set of rods for a 350 engine build. The guy selling them thinks they are from a 350 chevy but not 100% sure because they have been sitting in a box in his garage. So he gave me measurements.

The total length of the rod is 7.75 inch, the small end ID is .900 inch, and the big end ID is 2.22 inch.

I thought for stock 5.7 rods it is supposed to be small end ID .927 inch, and big end ID 2.10 inch. And i have no idea what the overall length is.

So what i am asking is does anyone know what the first set would be? Maybe resized or something like that? I am still somewhat new to this, so any help would be appreciated

2.10" is the rod journal OD size. The rod ID would have to be bigger for the bearing shells.

ok so these would probably work. How about the length? Is this the overall length of a 5.7 rod? Here is a pic of what i am working with

The length is the distance between the centers of the two holes.

The rod would be 5.7" center to center shouldn't be as small as .9 more in the .920's there should only be a thousadth or two crush on the pin, over all length can change a ton from rod to rod. The rod in that picture is a Chevrolet rod thats what they look like. 400 rods are the only rod that would look similar, that is common enough to "find" in a box in your garage...they are 5.56" center to center, and on the rare chance you found 327 rods the big end diameter could be much smaller in 327's and other motors there were small and large crank journals the 350's are all the same if they came out of a 327 and still have the big 350 journal then they are identical to the 350 rod's.

P.S. I have a bunch of those rods how much are you paying?

I can have em for $45 but i havent bought them yet because i want to make sure they are in fact stock rods. The .9 is what was throwing me off, maybe he measured wrong.

or just used a ruller and took a guess. $45 isn't too bad for the set if they are what they are.

And if they don't need resizing.

ya but even if two of them need resizing your still doing good. It only costs about $12 to resize one.

I also wouldn't build an engine without ARP rodbolts, either. And, conventional wisdom says the rods should be resized if you do that (although my machinist said they were fine after I had mine installed - 2 years, 20k miles, no apparent problem).

Add that cost in, and you're in new aftermarket territory.

Re: Question on buying rods for engine build

ARP's are good bolts but you don't need anything fancy like a wave-loc. Those bolts can be troublesome. You must resize the rod to run those. So just buy the basic replacement bolts.
