tall deck small block swap...?
i have an 86 iroc and am still deciding on what motor to go with. im leaning towards a world products 427 small block, aluminium heads and BLOCK! they have several complete engines ready to drop in the car. pan to carb. tuned and broke in. 550+ hp. i need to know what issues im going to have by putting a tall deck block in the iroc....besides not fitting under the hood...lol. are headers for the third gen going to even fit? i would like to keep all accessories even AC. so i know room it limited. thanks guys!

Is the World products 427 SBC a "tall deck" block? I didn't think it was...?

i don't think their SBC 427 engines are tall deck.....so I would imagine no issues at all, besides custom $$$$ headers, 9", built trans, fuel system, etc etc. 15k and it'll get done no problem

Re: tall deck small block swap...?
I thought the only tall deck small block chevy engine block was the Olds Rocket Block from GM Performance Parts - and it's discontinued, right?
I know it had a cam to crank distance of a big block chevy, but the rest of it was sbc.
Are there other tall sbc blocks made?

Re: tall deck small block swap...?
There are tall deck SBC blocks but they're designed for race use only and are not cheap.
All the Motown cast and aluminum blocks are the standard 9.025" deck height.
The Dart Little M blocks are also 9.025" deck height.
Dart Iron Eagle blocks are available in 9.025" and 9.325". The bare block is $2700.
The Dart aluminum race blocks are available in 9.025", 9.325" and 9.500". The bare block is $5000+
The Iron Eagle and aluminum blocks are capable of 455 CID from a SBC.

Re: tall deck small block swap...?
ah thanks guys thats just what i wanted to hear. i wasnt positive if this block was tall or not. it did say on there web site that a tall deck is used in some engines but didnt say what ones. that makes me glad to hear its not a tall deck...lol. as far as the rest of the drive train....it will be a 5 speed tremec600 trans custom made carbonfiber drive shaft and moser 12 bolt with 33 spline axles. headers and the rest of the exhaust are my next big obstacle cause the car is lowered.... the engine is going to run me around 13,000 if i go with the aluminum block package....rest of the drivetrain complete will be another 6 to7,000 i think ruffly. but it will be strong, streetable and still run elevens with full interior and stuff even if i dont put the bottle on it.

if you're spending 13k on a motor it better run much faster than 11s or i'd be sad.

not for it being all aluminum, and turn key, and dyno tuned all ready. most shops to do me an engine like that around here would be around 8 grand with an iron block, no carb, not broke in or dynoed or tuned. about another 2 grand with an aluminum block. so it would cost me another 3 grand for the carb tuned dynoed and stuff which is worth it to me, i can just drop it in my car and run it wont have to tune it dyno it and stuff before i can run it hard. if my car would be set up for the 1/4 mile(suspension) it should run 10's but its not set up for that plus it has 2 year 24,000 mile warantee. what shop deos that around here for something like that....lol no one does!!!! lol

for that much money just put in a ls1 engine with heads and cam, it'll get double the gas mileage and still run bottom 11s.

Re: tall deck small block swap...?
ive thought about it but i want a 5 speed they are stronger then the six speed and have a tighter shift pattern. what im doing will be different there are pretty many members who can say they have an lsx in there third gen, but how many can say they have a 427 small block....lol. i have thought about the lsx swaps though that is an awsome swap!!!!

Re: tall deck small block swap...?
My dad and his friend helped put a 427 out of a 67 vette, into my first z28. That motor was bada$$. It was much for a camaro, had to add alot to keep it together. They boxed the frame and added sub-frame connectors. But when it was done i drove it for a while got 8 miles to the gallon around town and 10 on the highway. The motor pushed about 525hp and 500ft lbs of torque. I ended up selling the car for 15k for my college tuition and books for 2yrs..... Should have kept the car!!

Re: tall deck small block swap...?
is the novelty of the all aluminum small block worth12k?
when all is said and done, its still just a small block chevy, and there are millions of these cars with them. I dont feel that there are millions of thirdgens with the lsx swaps, true there are a lot of them, but you are going to spend 12k on just the engine, with the lsx swap you could buy a strong rear, a good t56, the swap parts, an ls1, swap heads and cam and put down better numbers for almost the same amount of money.

Isnt the whole reason people put 6 speeds in these cars cause they are stronger then the 5 speeds? And with the 5 speed you arent getting the advantage of a .50 overdrive for the highway.
Either way, seems like your going to have a really nice car. I am going to have to settle with my 388 iron block with aluminum heads and an automatic lol...

Re: tall deck small block swap...?
The T56 is substantially stronger than the T5, and is pretty easily upgradeable to handle a stupid amount of power. Takes alot more to make a T5 handle any power. The .50 6th gear OD is nice too. Can use some really short gears in the back w/o losing anything on the highway.

Re: tall deck small block swap...?
stock for stock a 6 speed is stronger by far then the t5. but im going with tremec....the 5 speed made by tremec is stronger then there 6 speed trans and the shift pattern in the 6 speed is big and has alot longer throw then the 5 speed which is about half as much shifter travel. and before it is said....they both had identical shifters on them. it was the trans itself that made the shift differant. and the tremecs are alot cheaper then having my t5 built to handle the same hp. i got 3 differant quotes of 3 grand to 3500 to redo the t5 and have it alot stronger. the tremec 5 speed is around 2 grand new!
