AAAHHHHH THIS IS DRIVING ME INSANE!!!! (motor wont mate with tranny)

If this has been posted before i apologize.

I have an 84 Trans Am that was originally an L69 with a five speed. My dad blew the motor sky hight in '02 and I tore it apart in '04 with an if i fix it its mine deal. We got a H code LG4 out of an 87 caprice for free. The HO motor had a 10.4 inch flywheel but because of the rear seal change and different bolts we had to get a new flywheel and everything. Now all my research and part number matching says we have all the right parts. The flywheel was 12.5 inches i forget exactly its bigger and thats the point. Now when I finally got to the point of dropping the engine in the car late aug before i went back to school it didn't go in. My dad said part of the issue is the bottom of the flywheel is hitting the bellhousing. A guy he knows said to drop the tranny bracket and get the angle right with the tranny.

Did GM change the bell housing between 84 and 87? And I am open to any suggestions as to how the hell I can get this to go.

I want to pull the tranny and do it that way but we don't have the room or the equipment (proper or otherwise to deal with this idea.

Ideas anyone?

You can't use the larger flywheel with a T5. You need the 12.75", 153 tooth one, not the 14" 168 tooth one.

It is a 12.75 inch flywheel that is hitting the bellhousing. Sorry if that caused some confusion.

Do you have a part number for it?

I don't have it handy as I am at school, Its an AC Delco part and it was confirmed by a clutch shop as the correct part. The problem is clearence in order to make the tranny mate. If they changed the bellhousing then thats our problem. If they didn't then I think it might just be a tight fit and we have to play with it until it works.

Found the part online heres the number
388023

Re: AAAHHHHH THIS IS DRIVING ME INSANE!!!! (motor wont mate with tranny)

I don't know the part #s off hand.

If it's 12.8", it will fit in the BH. Period.

If it's not 12.8", but rather is 14", then it will NOT fit in the BH. Period.

The 83-85 Camaro/Firebird V8 T-5 flywheel is identical in outer diameter to the 86-up one. I have some of both in stock to compare, I can tell you with absolute certainty that there is NO DIFFERENCE in size.

I also have BHs from 83 (mechanical), 84, and 91 on hand. All are identical in size. The 83 obviously is set up for linkage while the others are hydraulic; but the actual housing itself is the same size.

The same starters work on both flywheels as well.

If yours is not fitting, then you have a wrong part, somewhere. The fit should not be tight, should be about ¾" of clearance all the way around IIRC. I suggest you measure the OD of your flywheel, or count the teeth. Don't worry about part #s; that's too much like WORK, and apparently might not give the right answers ANYWAY; just let the part identify itself.
