Re: LG4 383 Stroker
Does Eagle Specialties or anybody else make a stroker kit for this 305 block that you know of, cuz I really want to keep the block, and moving up to a 350 with CA smog laws will probably not sit as well as a 305. Plus, I'll truthfully be able to tell people that they just got smoked by a 305, hahaha!

Re: LG4 383 Stroker
They don't check the block casting or stamping #s in CA. I know, because I moved out there a couple of years ago, and went through that. After I stupided out and wasted my money building a 305, thinking exactly what you're thinking now.
As long as it's a SBC, and everything that's supposed to be there is there (EGR, AIR, sensors, wires, lines, cat, etc. etc. etc.) and of course as long as it blows clean on the dyno, it'll go through.
Don't spend money on a 305.

Re: LG4 383 Stroker
So what kind of 350 block do you think would be the best to build a 383 stroker but allow me to use the original emissions equipment, most likely an 350 from an IROC. However I still want to keep the Q-jet. I just worried that after spending the time and my hard earned money that it will all be in vain as soon as meets the sniffer. My uncle does smog at his auto shop and when I got it smogged this last time they had to try 3 times to get it to pass, and it was in sound mechanical condition, the only mods it has is an Edelbrock performer manifold. I know the fuel injection will probably take away a lot of that worry, but carbs are so much simpler. Do you think that they will be able to tell the difference between a 350 and a 383 stroker, do you have to tell them its a 383? Also, the fact that I live right in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley where air pollution is high they will probably be even more strict. Ahh, sometimes it seems everything is going against the car.

There is a lot you can do legally to the LG4 to improve power and still sniff clean. Been there, done that. As soon as you consider spending a dime on the 305 shortblock (cam excepted), it's time to get a 4" bore block.
An '87-later 350 block would be a good place to start for the 383. It will have one-piece rear main seal, and 383 cranks are less expensive for internal balance (the #1 giveaway for 383 vs. 350 - the external balance damper).
I'd trust sofa about what will work and what won't. As long as the cam duration isn't excessive, you shouldn't have any problem with the sniffer.
