406 tpi motor suggestionz

Im gonna make a long story short. Car hasn't run in 7 years. Last weekend i went to my dads house, aired up the tires put in a battery and drove it onto the trailer. Its now at my house ready to work on. I has a cracked head. Other than that it is just like i had it in 1999 when i drove it on the street and raced it at LA Raceway in Lawton, ok. 1/8 mile track.
406 ci, L82 cam, shorty headers, good exhaust, AFPR 28lb injectors, 882 heads, hyper flat-tops, 700 tranny, 4.10 gears (ouch), stock 305 chip.
I cant find my hypertech chip, which wouldn't idle right anyway. But the engine ran a good bit faster with it.
Stock ignition. I thought the ignition was holding me back to less than 5000 rpm, but after some reading on here i guess it was the stock tpi holding back my revs.
This car has TONS of torque and was really fun to drive in town. Poor rear tires. Now i live in the country in NE Texas and it is all hiway miles. The rear-end has got to go. Hell i think it will be faster with a 3.27 anyway with all the torque and no revs. I have very, very little money to spend and just want a hot-rod again. I have another set of 882 heads and will start porting them soon, any other suggestions??

I think your best money spent would be aquiring the computer tuning equipment needed to custom burn your own computer chips and lots of reading on this forum in all of the relevant computer sections.

It's not a lot of cash outlay and I think you can really reap the benefits of what you have done so far.

Then start cruising swap meets for a cheap Holley stealth ram intake to replace your stock one!

DON'T!!!!!!!!

Those are terrible heads. Together with stock TPI, you're lucky to get to 5000 RPMs.

If you want an engine that runs decent, dump those heads and TPI. You can get a set of Vortec heads & intake manifold for around $1100 from Scoggin-Dickey. You'll have to get 400 head gaskets and drill the steam holes in the heads, but add a carb and without any porting, you'll run circles around what you could ever do with TPI and 882 heads.

Thanks for the replys; I have been studying about burning a prom. I think I will start there. I can burn my own prom for the price of buying one, and I think I can get all the help I need from this board. As far as the heads, a vortec and a carb would be great, but I dont have any money. Money is important. Right now I would be happy with a mid 13 sec car that I can drive, I gotta use what I got. I haven't had a hot rod in 7 years. Thats a lotta time to not "roast sum tires". What about the coil. What do y'all use. Is that holding me back at all. Im looking at 300 hp and 420 ftlbs in a 3500lb car. I drove it for 4 years as is and it was fun way back in 1998. I had MAJOR traction problems and it wont go 1/4 mile, hell i was well into 3rd gear in the 1/8. I put the 4.11 in it when i still had the stock 305 and raced on the 1/8. Now it is a really BAD idea. I wanna port out my tpi (thats cheap) port my crappy heads (cheap again) burn a prom, (not too expensive) 3.27 or 3.42 the rear (maybe i can trade gears or rears) buy some tires and battery (biggest expense @ aprox $500). Can someone tell me about the L-82 cam? I was told that at the time it was a good cam for a tpi car. Maybe something like .443/.465????? Maybe i can 2.02 the heads or use 1.6 rockers, i gotta do it for cheap! I have been hot-rodding for 30 years, so I got the skills. Just been out of it for a while.

By the way, the car is a 1986 IROC, GREAT looking car.

Re: 406 tpi motor suggestionz

You should do some serious junkyard hunting, in my opinion. If you have WAY more time than money then you should be looking at a used LTI intake to port instead of your TPI. Even when guys siamese the ports on a TPI they just don't seem to support the higher horsepower applications well.

If you're gonna burn your own prom chip, then you should be able to pick the cam that you want. Relatively speaking...

The best budget heads are at the wrecking yard again. I have used 350 TPI heads from a GTA and drilled steam holes in them with good success. These guys may have better ideas than that but junkyard wise, it's that or some high mileage vortec 350 heads from a ton truck or van.
