396 big block
I was curious if someone might be able to help me find out if a 396 big block would fit in my 85 camaro. I can't seem to find anything in the boards or any dimensions online about the block. and help and of information would be greatly appreciated.

All BBC blocks from the 396 to the 540 are the same size externally. Wherever a 454 will fit, so will every other short deck BBC.
The tall deck blocks from the big trucks fit most cars but the taller deck height causes other problems. There are only 2 factory tall deck blocks. The 366T and the 427T (6L and 7L) The newer crate motor 572 and 632 are also tall deck blocks.
If you have a 396 and want to use it, just follow the same swap instructions as installing a 454.

Yes a 396 BB will fit.......all you need is a big hammer and a lot of patience.
Check out the thread "BB Engine Swap Header" I started a while back. There are quite a few good pictures of several big blocks in 3rd gens. Go to the 4th page and you'll see mine after it's been installed.
Later,
Boo.
