LT1 swap. No yellow VSS Box. "Help Please"

Well as the title states I do not have the yellow VSS box on my passenger side under the dash. I was wondering if anyone had encountered this problem and if so could you please help me out. By the way I have a 91' Z28 Camaro with 305 TPI speed density engine.

Also where did you guys find the wire for the TCC Power and PNP signal?

Besides those few problems I just have to wire up the relays and finish up the exhaust work and the swap should be done within a week or two.

I heard of a couple differents ways of wiring the relays. As of right now I am just going to wire the fuel pump relay to the plus side of the pump and fan to the plus side of the fan. Do you guys do the same thing?

Thanks in advance,
Jay

If your car was TPI engine equipped vehicle, this is the reason why you don't have the VSS box under the dash. THe ECM had it. On TBI car's the little yellow VSS box was installed. So by the sounds of it you have removed your old ECM to put in its plavce the LT1's. Two possible options: 1. get out to a wrecker and pull out a VSS box from a TBI car or other similar - or look into a dakota digital box //http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=results/category_id=287/home_id=59/mode=cat/cat287.htm[/URL](Speed/ Tach Interface ) box that will hook up to the trans VS sensor. Next to this look into what the LT1's came with.

The yellow VSS box is not needed in a 94-97 LT1 swap. The LT1 pcm receives the input from the 4l60e or T56 reluctor in the transmission and then outputs it to the speedo wire. The output is a 4000 pulses per mile signal. Might be needed if you have a 92-93 LT1, I'm not sure on that.

Uhhh....wrong

All the TPI cars have the VSS under the passenger side of the dash next to the cruise control module, the TBI cars have the VSS on the speedo unit itself.

So what color box should I actually be looking for since I don't have a yellow one?

Can someone take a picture of what there under dash setup looks like?

Thanks,
Jay

Firebat,

If I just leave this VSS wire unconnected are you telling me that my car will still run fine?

No sorry - electronic speedo - VVS signal was received by the ecm. My 91Z TPI car didn't have a VSS box - check your shop manual - TBI car's came with the VSS box under the dash.
I can post the page # from the shop manual if you wish..
THe only thing I can think of is if we are not understanding something here..

Both the wiring harness I have from my '87 GTA with a 350 TPI has the buffer box, and the one out of a '90 T/A with a 350 TPI has the buffer box as well.

If the VSS wire is not connected to the PCM from the VSS sensor, it may throw a code. The engine should run without the VSS. If you have a 4l60e, then its really needed. What year of LT1, what tranny, and what car did the LT1 come out of?

I'm just saying the yellow box isn't needed. A VSS signal for the PCM is needed to have a correct speedometer reading. The LT1 PCM basically does the same thing the yellow box does.

If your car didn't originally come with the yellow box, then you may need to get a speedometer from a car that had one so that you have a 4000 pulses per mile speedo.
