What about a 5.3L DOD swap?

Has anyone thought about or started a swap using a 5.3L displacemnt on demand engine from an Impala ss/Monte carlo ss (303hp) or a Tahoe (320hp)?
I think it would be great for my 89 L98 IROC-Z. Much more power and better gas mileage (especially with my 2.77 gears).

I have thought about and planed on it.

2.77 saves gasoline on a 5.3 liter V8. But it will
put load on 2.7 V4. And I'm afraid its to much load to stay in V4 Mode on the slightest Hill or even worse. Just take a look at the Impalas gearing. I intend to go with 3.23 gears and a 6L80 Transmission. 0-60 in <5 seconds for sure. Maby 4.5 if you substract the smaller amount of time it takes to shift in a Clutch to Clutch operation.
(Both Cartest-Sims with rev limiter set to 6300 which usually works fine on the stock springs to get over 60 Mph in the first 2 gears)

HMM

see ing how as im told all the ls series angines are interchangable why not start with a 6.0 from a truck they are cheap and then bolt on the normal stuff like a throttle body and mass air meter ,headr and tuning 350 rwhp should not be a problem plus in a light fbaody it will fly!!!!!!

Thats (almost) true for the Generation III (LS1,LS6,LQ9,LQ4,LM7,LR4,LM4,C5R)
But not for the Gen IV. An engine suporting DOD has specil holes for extra oiltrasnfer drilled into the block plus the oilpump moves more oil arround than non DOD
Plus.... PAUSE....

Hmm....

Do you think a DOD engine only turns 4 Injectors off?
It is a lot more. The hasel and money to retrofit DOD will not pay of.

BTW: The 6.0 LQ9 wights about 100 lbs more than the LH6, LC9 or LS1/LS2.

Well, my brother has informed me that he is going to buy a new Impala SS (to replace his 1996 Impala ) in the next few weeks, and seeing as I am his personal mechanic, I will be getting pretty intimate with the engine and it's systems. Maybe it would be do-able.

Time will tell

i think it would be a nice addition power plant wise for a third gen. ive had the 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 and they are all pretty good engines. with some mods pretty quick too.

they are interchangable in the same way SBCs are... you can bolt in one from another and the motor mounts, most of the accessory mounts, bellhousing, headbolt pattern, ect... all interchange.... and of course there are little gotchas, but its exactly like going between SBCs...

you can use a 6.0L from a gen IV with DOD and have DOD... you cant use a genIII 6.0L block for DOD because it doesnt have the oiling provisions for it.
DOD uses a silinoid to put oil pressure thru a special galley.. this locks lifters and disables them.. so its not pumping air. the computer cuts fuel and spark to thoes cyls... and you now have a 4cyl.

the later truck blocks are alum, and weigh the same as the rest of the alum genIII/genIV family.

oh, and if anyone is wondering, yes, most things are interchangeable between genIII and genIV.... they're ALMOST the same engines...

anyway, i wouldnt worry about the DOD... just run what you have.. even 7L non-DOD genIVs get mid 20mpg in real world daily driving... low 30s on the hwy, and of course, alot less if you're racing it in the city from stoplight to stoplight.... where DOD doesnt help you anyway because it goes to V8 mode when you floor it...
